Château Loudenne has a rich history with vines reputed to have been planted by The Romans on the 1st century AD. The vineyard lies to the North of Saint-Estèphe on the banks of the Gironde Estuary. The property’s close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean lends the Château a wonderful gravel-limestone terroir. Château Loudenne boasts it’s own port on the Estuary, from where their wines were exported direct to the UK throughout the 19th and early 20th century. Today, world-famous consultant oenologist Michel Rolland is involved in the winemaking. The beautiful pink Château has a history of hosting extravagant events and entertaining.

“I first came across the Château on our honeymoon aged 20 & 22 (a few years ago), where Bordeaux legend Martin Bamford MW organized a lunch party of 20 for us including 3 Masters of Wine. Somewhat daunting, but we held our own!” Esme Johnstone

Château Loudenne

Tasting notes

– A great vintage producing a concentrated, complex wines with aromas of cedarwood and spice with a lovely velvety tannic finish

– Wine at maturity with very silky tannins and fine, dense old factory material. Tiled red, chocolate, tobacco, a little undergrowth, and flavours of blackcurrant and ripe fruit.

– A very classic Bordeaux vintage. This blend 60% merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It shows rather earthy, complex, expressive flavours and a very long finish.

– Another very classic Bordeaux vintage. Powerful and elegant on the nose (toast and tobacco), full-bodied with a very long finish.

– One of the great, due to almost perfect growing conditions the wine that was full-bodied, balanced and very rich in aromas have evolved with age to become more velvety.

– An exceptional vintage for Loudenne, selected by Decanter as among the best wines of the year. Imposing silky tannins in its youth, it aged very well and shows now finesse with liquorice and toasted Flavours.

– The vintage came good with perfect weather conditions before and during the harvest. With dense and serious tannins when young, the wine ages very well and shows today finesse and elegance.

– After 20 years of ageing the 2003 is still full bodied and with good fruit flavours 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc 1% Malbec.

– Another great vintage – soft mellow rich fruit with an excellent finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds tremendous flavour.

– Bright, elegant and at its peak now. In magnums even better with 4-5 years ahead of it.

– From this great forward and hot vintage. The proximity to the estuary shielded the grapes from the extreme heat to produce a very drinkable now and for the next 5-10 years.

– A classic vintage especially for the cabernet. Rich dry fruit with silky tannins.

– A lighter vintage perfect for drinking now. Good fruit and balance – delicious

– Not a heavy weighty wine, but a very pleasant claret that will be fabulous in double magnums & jeroboams.

– Drinking well with crunchy almost stewed red fruit flavours – much better than I was expecting.

– Surprisingly light for this exceptional vintage but it will develop into a very special wine in the coming few years.

– At its peak and lovely right now, Drink in the next 2-3 years.

– Chewy, spicy, rich, ripe red. Good, well balanced, tannins. Wow!

– Forward as expected with ripe, concentrated fruit. Drinkable already and will only get better & better.

-Very supple ripe red fruit that comes alive in the glass. Delicious already but needs to be kept in the cellar for a couple of years if you can wait.
