Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2019

Bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle, and orange pith. The palate is honeyed with underlying acidity, adding zestiness and a persistent finish of orange rind and marmalade with notes of... pear, ginger, and exotic fruit. It is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin of Vinous (June 2020) and is recommended to be enjoyed from 2024 to 2055. It also has scores of 93 from Vinous and 92 from Wine Spectator. About Chateau Coutet: The estate, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, is located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region. It was one of the first vineyards in Sauternes, beginning wine production in 1643. The property was acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac." Owned by the Baly family since 1977, Chateau Coutet is known for its luscious and elegant Sauternes. The vineyards, covering 35 hectares, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The unique terroir of the region, along with the influence of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), contributes to the distinctive sweet and concentrated flavor of the wine. 2019 Vintage in Sauternes: The 2019 vintage for Sauternes was characterized by ideal conditions for the development of botrytis, leading to richly concentrated sugar levels in the grapes. This resulted in naturally sweet wines with complex flavors. The vinification process involved multiple picking passes, with the first starting in early October, allowing for the selection of grapes with high potential alcohol content.

Chateau Gazin, Pomerol 2017

Château Gazin, while not as robust or intricate as its predecessors, achieves a delightful equilibrium that blends roundness and freshness seamlessly. Its 15-month maturation in both new barrels and... single-use barrels imparts an appealing structure and refines the tannins. Displaying a deep red hue, the bouquet introduces aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry and blueberry, subtly interwoven with discreet hints of vanilla and spice, notably nutmeg. A faint touch of menthol, characteristic of Cabernet Franc, lingers in the background, contributing a refreshing nuance. On the palate, the wine unfolds with a smooth and silky onset, echoing the red and black fruit notes from the olfactory experience, accompanied by floral undertones. Exhibiting a pleasing sweetness and ample volume, it maintains a graceful profile without becoming overly weighty. This fine vintage prioritizes the elegance of the fruit and is poised for immediate enjoyment.

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2018

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96/100 The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile... laced with the essence of graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is ultimately a wine of tremendous class that remains restrained and aristocratic in breeding. Don't miss it. Drink 2028-2048

Chateau Grissac, Cotes de Bourg 2016

A remarkably good 2016 that we knew we had to buy the moment we first tasted it. The wine is a delicious blend of Merlot and Malbec, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, that gives it layers of rich,... lush red berry fruit flavours, soft tannins and a hint of exciting minerality, that totally dwarfs its relatively humble status. It's no surprise this wine won a gold medal from Bordeaux, who are the harshest judges of their own. Château de Grissac dates back to the 14th century and has had a rich history, particularly during the French revolution. It is now owned and run by wine maker Madame Cottavoz who has devoted her life to her vineyards and wine. All of the above for only £10.95 a bottle – high quality, affordable Claret from a great vintage – welcome aboard Château de Grissac.

Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2017

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince... notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. 2023 - 2057 97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2016

The 2016 Rieussec is gorgeous. Despite the relatively low acidity of the vintage, it preserves a good deal of aromatic freshness, with plenty of lemon confit, passion fruit and coconut overtones. The... decision to lower the Sémillon a touch and increase the Sauvignon Blanc has paid handsome rewards. The 2016 is not a truly profound Sauternes - that would have been nearly impossible this vintage - but it comes close. Quite frankly, it is nearly impossible to spit. Rating: 93-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. 37.5cl bottles. Drinking range: 2019 - 2037 Rating: 97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019) The 2016 Rieussec is a blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle picked form 26 September until 4 November. It has a much more straightforward bouquet compared to the 2015 with light honeysuckle and white flower aromas. There is good acidity in the mouth thanks the passerillé berries, nicely balanced with a touch of orange zest towards the linear finish that will hopefully gain more weight during its élevage. It is likely to be an earlier-drinking Rieussec than the 2015. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) Lots of botrytis here in addition to dried mushrooms and dried fruit such as pineapple and peaches. Medium to full body. Medium sweet. Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2019

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com (June 2020) A juicy, fruity wine with lots of blue fruit, blackberries and dark chocolate. Pretty depth and structure to this. Polished and structured at the same... time Neal Martin, vinous.com The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. (June 2020)

Cheval des Andes, Mendoza 2017

James Suckling 100/100 This is the greatest Cheval des Andes ever. Discrete aromas of blackberries, flowers, stone and licorice. So perfumed. The integration of fruit, tannins and acidity is... fantastic. Full-bodied, tight and solid with beautiful depth and integrity. Extremely long and exciting. Complex and compelling with such refinement and length. A blend of 62% malbec and 38% cabernet sauvignon. Available in September 2020. Better after 2024. Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate 97+/100 In 2017 saw an early harvest, but they started picking on the 6th of March and continued until the 10th of April, more or less normal dates, early but not so much. The varietal break down this vintage comes to 62% Malbec and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the wine is slightly riper and higher in alcohol than 2016 (this 2017 is 14.2% alcohol). The different plots fermented separately with selected yeasts, and the élevage lasted for 15 months and was in 50/50 new and second use barrels, 90% of them French and the rest made with wood from Eastern Europe. They used 45% Bordeaux barrels, 45% 400-liter barrels and, for the first time, a 2,500-liter oak foudre. This is clearly the darkest of the trio of vintages I tasted together here—2015, 2016 and 2017—but all three have the elegant and powerful profile, the luxurious and creamy character found in the best Bordeaux wines in the last few years, wines of power with precision, concentration, energy and finesse. This seems to combine the clout of the 2015 and the freshness of the 2016 and feels something in between those two vintages. Their work in the vineyard toward the maturity of the tannins meant the challenge in 2017 was to not let the grapes ripen too fast and too early. The work is different for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, to get round tannins in Cabernet and get some tension in Malbec, the contrary of the normal tendency of the varieties. 2017 has less ripeness than the 2015 but more density than the 2016. The texture is velvety, precise and harmonious. This year, they introduced a larger foudre for 10% of the wine, with the aim to reach 20%, so that volume is increasing every year. I think this is showing more precision, and in a more challenging year, they managed to keep the quality on par with 2016. They have changed the label this year, to a cleaner and more elegant label that also reflects the direction the wine is going in. 81,500 bottles produced. Jane Anson 96/100 Savoury black fruits with scorched earth smoke, eucalyptus and cocoa bean, given focus and a sense of momentum by fresh acidities and a juicy finish. Malbec has the ability as does Pinot Noir to either drink early or to age for years, and you feel the elasticity and promise of the tannins in this wine. Blend at the end of ageing. Aged in 2500-litre oak casks, 70% new oak. Drink 2021 to 2040

CVNE Contino Reserva Rioja 2018

The Contino Reserva 2018, crafted by the esteemed CVNE in the heart of Rioja, stands as a testament to the region's capacity for producing wines with exceptional character and depth. This vintage... blends 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% shared between Garnacha and Mazuelo, showcasing a masterful amalgamation of Rioja's signature grapes. Aged meticulously for two years in oak barrels, with 20% American oak contributing sweet, vanilla hints and 80% French oak offering structure and spice, the wine achieves a harmonious complexity. Following its barrel aging, it further matured in the bottle within the cool, dark cellars of the winery, allowing its flavors to meld and mellow until its release. The tasting experience of the Contino Reserva 2018 unfolds with an intense nose that captivates with notes of strawberry and blueberry at the forefront, intertwined with the warmth of vanilla. This fruitiness is elegantly layered with touches of liquorice and balsamic, culminating in a finish that boasts an elegant touch of oak. The palate is invigorated by a great freshness that balances the wine's depth, ensuring that each sip is as inviting as the last. This Reserva pairs splendidly with a wide range of dishes. Its versatility shines when accompanied by Grilled and Roasted Red Meats, where the wine's robustness complements the savory flavors of the meat. For Pizza and Pasta lovers, its fruity and balsamic notes enhance the richness of the tomato-based sauces and ingredients. The wine also stands up beautifully to the heartiness of Casseroles and Stews, adding a layer of complexity and elegance to these comfort dishes. It is a great match for creamy cheese or mature strong cheese, highlighting its adaptable pairing ability. A top flight Rioja that is as good as it gets for less than £20 a bottle is great value and has a place reserved for it in my cellar.

Gaja, Barbaresco 2018

From the hardcore oenophile to the casual wine buff, I can attest to the power and purity of Gaja's Barbaresco, with this vintage having the most sumptuous perfume of blood oranges, orange peel,... straweberries, redcurrants, violets, rose petal and a touch of cedar. On the palate it is supremely elegant, with finessed tannins, dark chocolate, some balasamic elements and red berries. The acidity is mouthwatering and the finsh lingers for many minutes, enticing you to take another sip. Gaja seem to have returned to a much more traditional style of nebbiolo and the wine is that more special because of it.

Graham Beck, Brut Rose Vintage, Western Cape 2017

An excellent Vintage Rose where both varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, were whole bunch pressed together – this award winning vintage proves its pedigree time and again in international wine... competitions. The Pinot Noir lends a noticeable blueberry-laden ripeness and subtle spiciness while the Chardonnay contributes creamy complexity. The delightful salmon-pink hue of the Vintage Rosé perfectly complements the sumptuous strawberry notes and rich creamy complexity on the palate. An explosion of raspberry fruit and slight honeysuckle flavours on the palate, with a persistent yet delicate mousse. Alc 12.7

IDDA, Etna Rosso 2019

“This is really beautifully rich and opulent with aromas of ripe fruit, caramel and chocolate brioche. Some earth, too. Medium-to full-bodied with soft, integrated tannins that give a cashmere... mouth feel.” 96 points James Suckling Since its first 2017 vintage, IDDA Etna Rosso has been causing huge excitement in both the Italian wine scene and lovers of wine globally. The wonderful result of the teaming up of Etna wine producer Alberto Graci and Barbaresco legend Angelo Gaja (Gaja's wines have been described as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made" (Wine Spectator) Remarkably Burgundian in both weight and style, IDDA Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes grown on the Southwest slopes of the volcano at an altitude of between 600m and 800m above sea level. Fermented in a combination of oak and concrete vats and then followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete.  Rich, beautiful, opulent ... With a high score of 96 points and at only £205 per case duty paid it is remarkable value for money.

Joseph Drouhin, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Embazees 2019

""The wine is bright with a light golden colour. Its aromas, reminiscent of hawthorn, acacia, honeysuckle, evolve toward hazelnut, and after a few years maturing, deliver some hints of honey and ripe pear. On the palate, this opulent wine offers long lasting flavours lingering a long time in the aftertaste"." - Joseph Drouhin

Joseph Drouhin, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Epenots 2019

The Joseph Drouhin Pommard Premier Cru 'Les Grands Epenots' 2019 offers a captivating sensory experience characteristic of high-quality Burgundy wines. It presents a beautiful deep ruby color,... indicative of its richness and depth. The nose is complex, intense, and elegantly nuanced, showcasing the traditional expressions of Pinot Noir. You will find hints of red fruits such as blackcurrant, gooseberry, and wild cherry, harmoniously mingled with lighter notes of violet and liquorice. Upon tasting, this wine delivers a clear-cut and lively impression, quickly giving way to a pleasant acidulous roundness. Its amplitude and power are balanced by an elegant structure, with tannins that are very much alive yet maintain a silky quality. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving behind delightful spicy flavors. The ageing process of this wine is meticulous, contributing significantly to its character. It is aged in oak barrels, which include 20 to 25% new barrels, for a period of 14 to 16 months. The origin of the wood is carefully chosen, coming from oak grown in the high forests of France. This ageing in high-quality oak imparts additional complexity and texture to the wine, enhancing its overall profile.

Michael Chapoutier Alchemy La Combe Pilate, Viognier, Chapoutier 2019

Viognier is the Rhone's most famous white grape variety for which it is justifiably famous and Micheal Chapoutier's biodynamic Alchemy is a superb example. Jeb Dunnock, the region's best known critic... described it as "a mini Condrieu..but not so mini” Micheal Chapoutier, best known for his iconic Hermitages, the visionary wine maker of the Northern Rhone bought this tiny vineyard, no bigger than most of our gardens, some 5 years ago. The plot is right next to his house and is the first plot he turned biodynamic, hence the label. Chapoutier personally makes the wine by gently pressing whole bunches of grapes and leaving the juice on the lees (the skins) for a few days. The result is a dry, very fresh, full bodied viognier with hints of ripe peaches and orange blossom and a gorgeous flinty minerality and a savory finish. For those of us who appreciate good viognier, this is a must buy – delicious on its own but if anything it is a food wine – from oysters and dover sole to mildly spicy dishes and all white meats. You will not be disappointed.

Rosso Valdimonte 2018

This is a UK exclusive, Sangiovese blend with maturity at an unfathomable price which is utter perfection for drinking this summer. Wines like this are what working in the wine trade is all about –... a small volume of exceptional, mature red wine parcel from an artisanal producer at an incredible price tag. La Palerna sits high at 550-600m right on the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Thankfully for all of us, they are on the Umbrian side of the border and the price reflects this. At this altitude, the wines have a wonderful freshness and elegance. Yields are low, grapes are hand harvested and sorted, and such care and precision are taken in the winemaking which is evident in the quality of the wine. We have visited Bordeaux classified growths and Grand Cru Burgundies who take the same level of care in production. The overriding reason for all of this is perhaps down to winemaker extraordinaire, Mauro Monicchi who has worked across Bordeaux and the South of France, he now oversees winemaking for first class estates across Tuscany, namely Montalcino and Montepulciano. The quality of wines can also be put down to owner Luigi Merendelli’s philosophy to produce “only great wines”. I can confirm they do just that across the board, but this red is a home run at this price. The wonderful thing about central Italian reds are they are incredibly versatile when pairing with food and can be drunk all year around, indeed these are the wines to open at dinner parties or have at weddings.

Vignerons des Terres Secretes, Pouilly-Fuisse, Les Preludes 2018
