M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, De l’Oree 2022

"This has the characteristic breadth and fat of De l'Orée, with a surprisingly bright and piercing acidic line. Rich, ripe mango, with a touch of pineapple, the alcohol and oak are both surprisingly... well balanced for a vintage like 2022. Not the most mineral or fine perhaps, but very good. From 60-year-old vines in the lieu-dit Les Murets at the top of the hill on heavy, water-retaining soils." Decanter 97/100

M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, l’Ermite Blanc 2022

"Surprisingly full-bodied for L'Ermite, richer in body than a classic vintage. This is precise and fine, with notes of lemon verbena and struck flint. Reductive now, so give it time, but there's... great drive and focus. Unusually high acidity (3.2-3.3 pH) which is rare for Marsanne. From east-facing vineyards situated around the chapel, which are the only white vineyards on the granitic part of Hermitage, other than Dard & Ribo's plots." Decanter 98/100

M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Le Meal Blanc 2022

"Decidedly rich in style, the oak is quite marked, with roasted pineapple notes, lemon verbena and lemon thyme. Very full-bodied, this is massive, assertive and powerful, but with great freshness and... energy. Flinty, smoky elements and a long, salty, mineral finish. One for the ages. Pure Marsanne, vines are over 50 years old, planted on pebbles, clay and some loess, facing south. Whole-bunch pressed, half fermented in demi-muids, half in vats." Decanter 99/100 – best Rhône white wine of the vintage

M. Chapoutier, Luberon, La Ciboise 2020

The wine, with its deep red colour, unfolds a complex bouquet of black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, inviting the palate into a rich tapestry of flavours. These fruity notes are... elegantly intertwined with lovely notes of liquorice, complemented by silky tannins. A blend of Grenache Noir and Syrah, it pairs well with sausages, pumpkin, or squash.

M. Chapoutier, Saint-Joseph, Granits Blanc 2022

"Very darkly coloured. Meaty, bloody charcoal notes, along with melted-down blackberries and a touch of damson. Full-bodied but not massive, this is a very grand, savoury style that is extremely... concentrated and promises great complexity. Structured with forthright acidity and bold, grippy tannins, just a bit too bold, perhaps. Not the most refined but this is still an excellent wine. 10% whole bunch." Decanter 95/100

Michael Chapoutier Alchemy La Combe Pilate, Viognier, Chapoutier 2019

Viognier is the Rhone's most famous white grape variety for which it is justifiably famous and Micheal Chapoutier's biodynamic Alchemy is a superb example. Jeb Dunnock, the region's best known critic... described it as "a mini Condrieu..but not so mini” Micheal Chapoutier, best known for his iconic Hermitages, the visionary wine maker of the Northern Rhone bought this tiny vineyard, no bigger than most of our gardens, some 5 years ago. The plot is right next to his house and is the first plot he turned biodynamic, hence the label. Chapoutier personally makes the wine by gently pressing whole bunches of grapes and leaving the juice on the lees (the skins) for a few days. The result is a dry, very fresh, full bodied viognier with hints of ripe peaches and orange blossom and a gorgeous flinty minerality and a savory finish. For those of us who appreciate good viognier, this is a must buy – delicious on its own but if anything it is a food wine – from oysters and dover sole to mildly spicy dishes and all white meats. You will not be disappointed.
