Chateau Senejac, Haut-Medoc 2023

Château Sénéjac always punches above its weight as it does this year with a price of just £11.50 per bottle in bond. It has consistently been one of our top selling drinking wines from Bordeaux... and having tasted it Bordeaux 10 days ago it will be again this year – it was superb. A top Cru Bourgeoise owned by the Cordier family (Château Talbot,) the estate is overseen by Alfred Tesseron and the team from Pontet-Canet ( a 100 point wine this year). Soft but plentiful tannins from the first moment, this is lovely, with a real sense of grip and life, rises gently through the palate, touches of tomato leaf and liqourice root coupled with ruby brambled fruit and an overall sense of balance and cheer, Haut Medoc typicity, austere tannins on the finish, but in a way that suggests ability to age, and an ability to bring you out of the glass and into the place and the terroir. Nancy Bignon Cordier, also owner of Château Talbot in St Julien. A value, one to look out for. 92 Points Jane Anson "The 2023 Sénéjac has a somehow 'distant' bouquet that requires aeration to open up, with graphite/pencil shavings littered over the light black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright, slightly bitter entry that at least has decent tension. It is not a powerful Haut-Médoc—quite linear, strict and classical in style.. 90-92 points Neil Martin

Chateau Siran, Margaux 2020

The Chateau Siran 2020 from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France, is a commendable wine that has received notable acclaim. This vintage is primarily a blend of 47% Merlot, 43% Cabernet... Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot, showcasing a classic Bordeaux style. 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2023 This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026. 92 Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2023 The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran. 93 Jane Anson, Decanter.com, May 202 This is powerful and juicy with well balanced, opulent berry fruits - easy to fall in love with. This really is one of the few that has tannins that feel well caressed by the fruits, and the slightly higher than average alcohols gives a flattering feel through the mid palate. Nice job from winemaker Marjolaine Defrance and owner Edouard Miahle (who is now president of AOC Margaux, having succeeded Gonzague Lurton). Tasted twice. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 35% new oak. Hubert de Boüard consultant oenologist. Harvest September 11 to October 3

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2019

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com (June 2020) A juicy, fruity wine with lots of blue fruit, blackberries and dark chocolate. Pretty depth and structure to this. Polished and structured at the same... time Neal Martin, vinous.com The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. (June 2020)

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2023

One of our most popular releases annually and a firm UK favourite from Saint-Julien, Château Talbot is in our opinion one of the best value left bank clarets. This 2023 has surpassed all... expectations and is offered on the UK market this morning 20.1% down on last year’s 2022. This is a classical style Claret which is absolutely gorgeous, it will last for many years to come and as Neal Martin says, may even be better than the 2022, we concur after tasting in Bordeaux. “A medium- to full-bodied red with very fine tannins. It’s firm and structured, showing a bright, dark-fruited character. Focused, with a good center-palate and a lingering finish. Really polished." 94-95 points, James Suckling "More proof that Talbot is on a roll, revved up and ready to take off. This is a brilliantly juicy but understated Talbot, lovely quality, classically-minded with cassis, blueberry, mint leaf, cocoa bean, espresso and powerful grilled fennel. Great stuff. 60% new oak for ageing, and a generous 54hl/ha yield." 94 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Talbot is another strong wine for this re-emerging estate. Powerful, deep and impressively resonant, the 2023 is striking. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, lavender and dried herbs build over time. There's terrific depth and intensity here, with fine balance to match. This is a superb showing from Talbot and the team led by Estate Director Jean-Michel Laporte. Drink 2030-2053." 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous "Offering up aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, plums, espresso roast and crushed mint, the 2023 Talbot is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a rich but lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Harvested over the course of fully four weeks, it's a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that attained 13% alcohol." 92-94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate "The 2023 Talbot contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to date, at 77%. It was picked from September 13 to October 6 at 54hL/ha according to winemaker Jean-Michel Laporte. Matured in 60% new oak, this has a fragrant bouquet that, like one or two fellow Saint-Julien wines, discretely unfolds in the glass. Quite precise with blackberry, cedar and light pencil box scents, there is a Pauillac-like tincture here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, grainy tannins. It’s overtly classic in style, albeit with more mid-weight depth compared to some vintages of Talbot. Displaying fine cohesion and sapidity, this fans out on the finish, with a deft touch of white pepper livening things up. This is a very promising Talbot, and I may actually prefer it to the previous vintage." 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Cissac 1998

The 1998 Château Cissac is an excellent vintage claret, known for its ability to age well. This wine has a deep color and strong legs, indicating its quality. It has a rich and aromatic nose with... plenty of cherry fruit and a hint of maraschino cherry at the end. The tannins have softened over time, making the wine smooth and well-balanced. It is enjoyable now and will continue to improve with age.

Cissac 2023

Chateau Cissac 2023 is an beautifully made Cru Bourgeoise claret with commendable reviews from the critics and released at only £8.00 per bottle in bond. With a large and loyal following in the UK... it is a wine we should all be buying this year – it is one of the bargains of the vintage ‘good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style’ Markus Del Monego MW ‘A good vintage at this estate’ Jane Anson Intense purple colour with violet hue. Very elegant and expressive nose, very pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of raspberries in the background and discreet toasting. A whiff of vanilla and discreet floral hints in the background. On the palate well-structured with balanced tannins, good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style, however interpreted in a contemporary way. 92 Points Markus Del Monego MW A good vintage at this estate, with vibrant red cherry and damson fruit, a good dollop of black pepper spice and fresh floral aromatics. It's a little austere but it's juicy and has sinewy tannins that suggest ageing ability. A success, with personality and a pretty feel. Owner Marie Vialard. 91 Points Jane Anson With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges. 91 Points Decanter

Estates in the Graves. When tasting the wine, the ripeness of cabernet sauvignon was evident and the depth of flavour and structure fantastic in this 2023. Chevalier is as gorgeous as ever. "Plenty of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate and flint aromas that follow through to a full body, yet it’s in check and focused with a beautiful framing of fine tannins. The purity of ripe fruit is impressive with cabernet really showing through. 63% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc." 97-98 points, James Suckling “The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier was picked from September 7 to 30 and contains 13% alcohol. This is quintessential "DdC" on the nose: black fruit, sous-bois and hints of black olive at first, subtle marine notes emerging with time in the glass. There’s wonderful focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pencil-shaving-tinged black fruit on the entry. Perhaps a bit grippier with more spine than one would expect (especially following the more sensual 2022), this is very traditional in style, with a tremendously long and satisfying saline finish. Superb." 94-96 points, Neal Martin "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier reveals a perfumed, incipiently complex bouquet of dark wild berries, cassis, rose petals, spices and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and bright acids, it concludes with a long, saline, gently oak-inflected finish. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc is maturing in 40% new barrels." 94-96 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a little broody and oaky to start, needing coaxing to bring out a gorgeous core of black cherries, redcurrants, and cassis, with underlying hints of violets and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate has a solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and bright acidity supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc." 94-96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier is beautifully resonant in the glass. Deep, layered and quite persistent, the 2023 has so much to offer. In many vintages, this red needs time to be at its best, but this edition has enough forward fruit to make me think it will drink well with minimal cellaring, even if the acids remain brisk. Graphite, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and rose petal build into the tense, saline-infused finish. The 2023 is all finesse. 2030-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni "Always one of the benchmark wines of a vintage, and here showcasing the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon in 2023 (as well as the potential for varying yields, as they are down at 30hl/h here). Well balanced, great depth of ink, cassis, bilberry and damson fruits, rises through the palate, with tannic grip and plenty of grilled but carefully judged oak. A great Chevalier, not perhaps at the very top of recent vintages here, but one that will give huge amounts of pleasure, and captures the great classicsm of the year. 35% new oak for ageing, Bernard family owners." 95 points, Jane Anson

Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2023

Château Ducru Beaucaillou is one of the most celebrated left bank estates and one of the most well-known and well-loved of the Grand Crus Classés. The 2023 vintage has been released today at £1488... per case 12x75cl and is 33.7% down on the previous vintage opening en primeur price. This is unarguably one of the most esteemed releases of the campaign. The 2023 vintage has been reviewed with hyperbolic praise. This Estate is a consistent overperformer in an appellation which is bursting with some of the best Châteaux in Bordeaux, very highly recommended as always if you are lucky to have an allocation. "Saffron, licorice, turmeric, espresso, black cherries, blackberries, mint, and flowers create the perfume. The palate is vibrant, fresh, elegant, concentrated focused. The fruits are ripe, clean, and pure, with a racy, freshness. But, the wine is not overly bright, instead, it is silky, succulent, finesse-oriented, and elegant. The finish holds your attention for close to 50 seconds. The key to the success of the vintage at Ducru was finding the exact moment to pick. Ducru Beaucaillou continues its unstoppable roll of fabulous vintages. Produced from blending 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot, 13% ABV, 3.7 pH. Picking took place from September 8 -- October 3." 96-98 points, Jeff Leve "Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou opens with classic great Cabernet notes of blackcurrants, mulberries, and ripe plums leading to a perfume of lilacs, lavender, and pencil shavings with a touch of cardamom. The light to medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and so, so elegant, with a firm backbone of grainy tannins and wonderful tension giving definition to the black and red berry layers, finishing long and fragrant. This is more structured than most Médoc wines this year and very impressive. The blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot, with pH 3.70 and TPI 89." 95-97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "This has aromas of blackberries and blackcurrant, as well as graphite and flint. Some gunpowder. It’s full-bodied with extremely refined tannins, a creamy character and al-dente fruit at the finish. Crunchy, succulent and linear. Mineral edge to it, like licking a stone. Energetic. 83% cabernet sauvignon and 17% merlot." 96-97 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a heady, sumptuous Saint-Julien. The aromatics alone are captivating. Truffle, rose petal, blood orange, pomegranate, spice and menthol build in a creamy, lavish Ducru. The 2023 is a classic Bruno Borie wine that emphasizes textural opulence. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous floral and spice-driven top notes. The balance of opulence and vibrancy is compelling." 95-97 points, Antonio Galloni "Glass-staining violet. A serious Ducru, delivered with precision and balance, with plenty of concentration and a slow, long build, layered, fine and sappy tannins. Proof again that this is a great Cabernet year in this corner of Bordeaux, less velvet concentration than the 2022 Ducru perhaps, but more finesse and packed full of nuance, and a saline mouthwatering finish. 41hl/h yield, 100% new oak, with long seasoning of up to five years, nine different coopers." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Ducru-Beaucaillou, matured in 100% new oak for a planned 18 months, has a less forceful bouquet than the 2022 last year and, consequently, shows more refinement and poise. The scents don't come barging out of the blocks, but they creep up on you. The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh entry. Showing moderate depth, it’s quite linear in style and grippy. A faint touch of bell pepper emerges on the classically styled finish that reminds me of some of the old vintages of Ducru-Beaucaillou. This is the strictest vintage I have encountered in some time." 94-96 points, Neal Martin

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023

The solid center-palate and sure nature says La Mission, as it should, being the second wine of the estate. Medium body with a creamy and refined tannin structure that is long and true. Oyster-shell... and blackcurrant character, as well as crushed stones. Direct. 48.3% merlot, 39.4% cabernet sauvignon and 12.3% cabernet franc. 95-96 James Suckling The 2023 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion showed beautifully, with a ripe, round, supple, sexy style. Black raspberries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and tobacco are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it has a classic La Mission supple, round, opulent style that has so much to love. 91-94 Jeb Dunnuck Deep ruby colour, makes an immediate impression with its elegant, uplifted tannic grip delivering careful construction of red roses, blueberry and black cherry fruit, grilled spices and understated energy. Will need a good few years in bottle before fully softening, but full of joy. 93 Points Jane Anson

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023

Le Clarence de Haut Brion is Château Haut-Brion's second wine which is nothing short of exceptional every year, but this year in particular, we were all deeply impressed by the quality of the 2023... when we tasted the wines of the Haut Brion stable at La Mission in April. This is a baby Haut Brion, and a wonderful version of the heralded Grand Vin which will be approachable earlier than Haut-Brion herself. Le Clarence represents brilliant value for money. Please also see performance below of the similarly scored 2015 vintage. Very highly recommended. “Intensity and focus to this, with length and raciness for the second wine of Haut-Brion, showing polish and a refined texture. It’s medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and an exquisite finish. Caressing. 55.5% merlot, 40.9% cabernet sauvignon and 3.6% cabernet franc." 95-96 points, James Suckling "More intense and deeply coloured than the Chapelle, this is inky, cassis, spiced bilberry, with a slow build tannnic architecture, and the most gorgeous slate scrape. Exceptional vintage of this wine, one to savour." 94 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is well-defined on the nose with blackberry, cedar and a subtle mint aroma, showing a little more fruit concentration than the La Chapelle. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry and fine backbone. It’s a little granular in texture, sorbet-fresh and pliant, with redcurrant and cranberry fruit. This is very enticing, even at this early stage." 90-92 points, Neal Martin

Le Dragon de Quintus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

THE WINE ADVOCATE (90 - 92) points Drink Date: 2023 - 2038 Reviewed by: Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Issue Date: 20th May 2021, Source: May 2021 Week 3, The Wine Advocate "Composed of 84.7% Merlot and 15.3%... Cabernet Franc, while possessing an alcohol of 15.2%, the 2020 le Dragon de Quintus has a deep garnet-purple color and notions of plum preserves, kirsch, black raspberries and cinnamon toast, plus hints of mossy tree bark and incense. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black and red berries, supported by soft tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and spicy." JAMES SUCKLING 92-93 Points 28 Apr, 2021 – "A soft, round red with blackberry, chocolate and hints of spice and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and a juicy finish." DECANTER 89 points Tasted by Jane Anson(at Primeur week tastings in Bordeaux, 01 May 2021) "A fleshy, powerful, black cherry and damson filled Dragon. The high alcohols are just about matched by the depth of fruit but it brings things to a slightly abrupt finish, with an emphasis on some bitter grilled cumin spice. The harvest began on 11th September for the Merlot grapes and on 23rd September for the Cabernet Franc. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036." JANCIS ROBINSON 16 points Drink: 2023 - 2029 Full bottle 1,340 g. Cask sample taken 13 April. Nice and fresh! 84.7% Merlot, 15.3% Cabernet Franc. "Mid crimson with a pale rim. Light but warm, fully ripe impression on the nose. And a little marked acidity on the finish. The overall palate impression is not as rich as many of the 2020 St-Émilions I have been tasting, but then this is the first second wine I have tasted from the appellation in this vintage. Just a little stringy on the end.

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac 2023

Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild, the second wine Château Mouton Rothschild has been released 23% down on last year. As with the Grand Vin, there is a miniscule amount to go around and... allocations are like gold dust, please as always let us know ASAP. It is a consistent blue chip investment grade wine. Made from a selection of the youngest vines of the illustrious estate and with the same meticulous care taken in all aspects as with its bigger sibling, even down to the label chosen by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild which was inspired by a drawing of the famous painter-posterist Jean Carlu. I hesitate to refer to it as a second wine as it has a world renowned reputation within its own right, Neal Martin said of the 2022 “it's quite difficult to recognize this as a mere Deuxieme Vin” Neal Martin. "This is a tighter and more compact Petit Mouton with a full-bodied, compact palate that is framed nicely by the tannins. Savory and juicy. Structured. Contained. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Better than 2022?" 95-96 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Le Petit-Mouton is fabulous. It could easy be a Grand Vin at another address. Rich, ample and beautifully resonant in the glass, the 2023 impresses with its notable palate presence. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, cinnamon, rose petal and new leather are some of the many notes that build. The 2023 is seriously impressive. Wow! 2027-2043" 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni "Slate and grip, clear again here that this is not the most exuberant of vintages, it's classical with a serious backbone. That doesn't mean that Petit Mouton isn't out to make you happy, and you can expect plenty of black chocolate, damson, black cherry, signature cocoa bean, espresso and salted cracker, but the tannins are pretty fierce. Harvest September 7 to 30 (but 2/3 of grapes coming in after September 21), 39% of production." 94 points, Jane Anson

Lions de Batailley, Pauillac 2022

Quintessential Bordeaux from Château Batailley. We are delighted to offer their second label, Lions de Batailley (named after the Lions statues that guard the gate). Made from younger vines along... with some fruit that goes into their Grand Vin, it tastes reassuringly like the Batailley that we know and love. Wonderfully soft and approachable, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and at only £18 per bottle , you can't go wrong... “pure and so pretty... full and very silky.” “Full and generous”.

Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, Margaux 2023

The whole Marguax stable stood out when we tasted in April and Pavillon Rouge de Château Margaux 2023, was no exception this is a standout second wine from this prestigious estate. This vintage... Pravillon Rouge represents 30% of the production. Very Chateau Margaux, with perfumed violets, currants and other berries, as well as oranges. Medium body with fine, caressing tannins that are tight and vivid. Racy and refined. Brightness and beauty to this second wine. Succulent. Refined. One of the best Pavillon Rouges in a while. 30% of the production. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. 96-97 points James Suckling The 2023 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux accounts for 30% of this year's production. Deep garnet-purple in color, it pops from the glass with vibrant notes of red and black currants followed by hints of rosebud tea, crushed rocks, dried Provence herbs, and Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate delivers an impressive mid-palate of ripe, juicy red and black berry flavors with soft fine-grained tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing with a spicy lift. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.60. 92-94+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW Somewhat reminiscent of a cooler-fruited version of the lovely 2019, Château Margaux's 2023 Pavillon Rouge wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, raspberries, licorice and pipe tobacco, deftly framed by creamy new oak. Fine tannins, with energy and clear - and this is a 2nd wine that elevates the possibilities of the 2023 vintage. September 11 through to October 5 for harvest, 30% of the production in Pavillon. 93 points Jane Anson The 2023 Pavillon Rouge is a deep, intense wine. Bright acids drive a core of dark red-toned fruit, spice and flowers. There's a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, which makes structural elements stand out, but the tannins are on the lower side analytically. I would give this a few years to come together.
