Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2016

The 2016 Rieussec is gorgeous. Despite the relatively low acidity of the vintage, it preserves a good deal of aromatic freshness, with plenty of lemon confit, passion fruit and coconut overtones. The... decision to lower the Sémillon a touch and increase the Sauvignon Blanc has paid handsome rewards. The 2016 is not a truly profound Sauternes - that would have been nearly impossible this vintage - but it comes close. Quite frankly, it is nearly impossible to spit. Rating: 93-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. 37.5cl bottles. Drinking range: 2019 - 2037 Rating: 97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019) The 2016 Rieussec is a blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle picked form 26 September until 4 November. It has a much more straightforward bouquet compared to the 2015 with light honeysuckle and white flower aromas. There is good acidity in the mouth thanks the passerillé berries, nicely balanced with a touch of orange zest towards the linear finish that will hopefully gain more weight during its élevage. It is likely to be an earlier-drinking Rieussec than the 2015. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) Lots of botrytis here in addition to dried mushrooms and dried fruit such as pineapple and peaches. Medium to full body. Medium sweet. Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot, showcasing a classic Bordeaux style. 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2023 This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026. 92 Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2023 The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran. 93 Jane Anson, Decanter.com, May 202 This is powerful and juicy with well balanced, opulent berry fruits - easy to fall in love with. This really is one of the few that has tannins that feel well caressed by the fruits, and the slightly higher than average alcohols gives a flattering feel through the mid palate. Nice job from winemaker Marjolaine Defrance and owner Edouard Miahle (who is now president of AOC Margaux, having succeeded Gonzague Lurton). Following its barrel aging, it further matured in the bottle within the cool, dark cellars of the winery, allowing its flavors to meld and mellow until its release. The tasting experience of the Contino Reserva 2018 unfolds with an intense nose that captivates with notes of strawberry and blueberry at the forefront, intertwined with the warmth of vanilla. IDDA, Etna Rosso 2020

Since its first 2017 vintage, IDDA Etna Rosso has been causing huge excitement in both the Italian wine scene and lovers of (Italian) wine globally. The wonderful result of the teaming up of Etna... wine producer Alberto Graci and Barbaresco legend Angelo Gaja (Gaja's wines have been described as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made" Wine Spectator). The name IDDA comes from Sicilian dialect and means 'she'- a term of endearment that the locals use to refer to Mt Etna, the highest active volcano of Europe. Gaja had been intrigued with Etna since his friend, the oenologist Giacomo Tachis, first introduced him to the mountains' splendour in the late 90’, and it remained a rumbling vision forming in his mind. Remarkably Burgundian in both weight and style, IDDA Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes grown on the South West slopes of the volcano at an altitude of between 600m and 800m above sea level. Fermented in a combination of oak and concrete vats and then followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete. The soil is composed of clay and limestone overlaying Kimmeridgian marls. All vineyard processes are carried out in an environmentally-friendly manner, adapted for each terroir.

Joseph Mellot, Sancerre, Le Rabault Rouge 2021

We have always loved good Red Sancerre and Joseph Mellot's is a wonderful Pinot Noir alternative to the much more expensive red Burgundy. It reminds us of a good Volnay, with the same elegance and... soft tannins. The vineyards are among Sancerre's steep slopes with a flint rich soil and a cooler climate than in Burgundy, which adds to the freshness of the wine, with a gorgeous mineral backbone. Black cherry and blackberry flavours abound. It is ready to drink now and being a light-ish Pinot is perfect for a really good lunch. Grape: 100% Pinot Noir Alcohol: 13%

Le Dragon de Quintus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

THE WINE ADVOCATE (90 - 92) points Drink Date: 2023 - 2038 Reviewed by: Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Issue Date: 20th May 2021, Source: May 2021 Week 3, The Wine Advocate "Composed of 84.7% Merlot and 15.3%... Cabernet Franc, while possessing an alcohol of 15.2%, the 2020 le Dragon de Quintus has a deep garnet-purple color and notions of plum preserves, kirsch, black raspberries and cinnamon toast, plus hints of mossy tree bark and incense. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black and red berries, supported by soft tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and spicy." JAMES SUCKLING 92-93 Points 28 Apr, 2021 – "A soft, round red with blackberry, chocolate and hints of spice and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and a juicy finish." DECANTER 89 points Tasted by Jane Anson(at Primeur week tastings in Bordeaux, 01 May 2021) "A fleshy, powerful, black cherry and damson filled Dragon. The high alcohols are just about matched by the depth of fruit but it brings things to a slightly abrupt finish, with an emphasis on some bitter grilled cumin spice. The harvest began on 11th September for the Merlot grapes and on 23rd September for the Cabernet Franc. Drinking Window 2024 - 2036." JANCIS ROBINSON 16 points Drink: 2023 - 2029 Full bottle 1,340 g. Cask sample taken 13 April. Nice and fresh! 84.7% Merlot, 15.3% Cabernet Franc. "Mid crimson with a pale rim. Light but warm, fully ripe impression on the nose. And a little marked acidity on the finish. The overall palate impression is not as rich as many of the 2020 St-Émilions I have been tasting, but then this is the first second wine I have tasted from the appellation in this vintage. Just a little stringy on the end.

Louis Jadot, Bourgogne Chardonnay Couvent des Jacobins 2022

One of the most trusted names in Burgundy, Louis Jadot make this excellent white Bourgogne with, unlike several of their wines, a good proportion of their own vineyard-grown fruit rather than bought... in grapes, from sites in the Côte d’Or & the Côte Chalonnaise. Great structure, lively acidity on the finish, as well as touches of green apple, peach, white blossom and a little vanilla, thanks to part fermentation in wood, make this like a petit Meursault, in our opinion. A white burg bargain!

M. Chapoutier, Luberon, La Ciboise 2020

The wine, with its deep red colour, unfolds a complex bouquet of black fruits such as blackberry and blackcurrant, inviting the palate into a rich tapestry of flavours. These fruity notes are... elegantly intertwined with lovely notes of liquorice, complemented by silky tannins. A blend of Grenache Noir and Syrah, it pairs well with sausages, pumpkin, or squash.

Macon Prisse, ‘Les Clochettes’ 2022

A sensational and affordable white Burgundy. Pure Chardonnay fermented in stainless steel to preserve its freshness and soft honey and lemon flavours. Full bodied with the perfect fresh and crisp... acidic finish. We have tasted over 20 wines from the Mâconnais region in the lead up to our selection of this particular Mâcon Prissé which was undoubtedly the best, by some margin. A glorious and extremely well-balanced white wine and at a perfect 12.5% Alcohol.

Michael Chapoutier Alchemy La Combe Pilate, Viognier, Chapoutier 2019

Viognier is the Rhone's most famous white grape variety for which it is justifiably famous and Micheal Chapoutier's biodynamic Alchemy is a superb example. Jeb Dunnock, the region's best known critic... described it as "a mini Condrieu..but not so mini” Micheal Chapoutier, best known for his iconic Hermitages, the visionary wine maker of the Northern Rhone bought this tiny vineyard, no bigger than most of our gardens, some 5 years ago. The plot is right next to his house and is the first plot he turned biodynamic, hence the label. Chapoutier personally makes the wine by gently pressing whole bunches of grapes and leaving the juice on the lees (the skins) for a few days. The result is a dry, very fresh, full bodied viognier with hints of ripe peaches and orange blossom and a gorgeous flinty minerality and a savory finish. For those of us who appreciate good viognier, this is a must buy – delicious on its own but if anything it is a food wine – from oysters and dover sole to mildly spicy dishes and all white meats. You will not be disappointed.
