Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan 2023

La Mission Haut Brion has been released at 30% less than last years price to a flurry of critical acclaim. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux last month, we loved it with its wonderfully rich nose,... backed up by magnificent opulent fruit flavours. Very pure with mineral flavours, soft tannins and a finish that lasts and lasts. If the 1855 classification was revised, this Château would almost certainly be a 1st Growth - in the meantime it is remarkable value for a very fine wine that we should all buy. In 2023 La Mission is comprised of only 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with 53% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc. Ageing in 70% new oak. Alcohol 14.5% "One of the finest wines in the vintage, the 2023 Château La Mission Haut-Brion is based on 52.7% Merlot, 29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It's one hell of a gorgeous wine offering a massive nose of black raspberries, graphite, liquid flowers, scorched earth, and chocolate-like aromas and flavors. It delivers remarkable purity, full-bodied richness, no hard edges, and fine-grained, sweet tannins. The overall balance paired with opulence here is something to behold, and it’s incredible to find this level of quality in the vintage." 96-100 points, Jeb Dunnuck “The classy mouth-feel and length to this is really gorgeous, and it seduces you with its texture of fine silk and finesse. Lasts for a long, long time. Medium body with medium, creamy and round tannins and a layered, textured finish. Shows blackcurrants, lead pencil and crushed stone at the end. 52.7% merlot, 29.6% cabernet sauvignon and 17.7% cabernet franc." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A blend of 52.7% Merlot, 29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17.7% Cabernet Franc, La Mission Haut-Brion 2023 has a pH of 3.7 and a deep garnet-purple color. It slowly emerges from the glass with fragrant notes of ripe plums, boysenberries, and Morello cherries, opening out to a wonderfully evocative nose of Indian spices, fragrant soil, iron ore, and rose oil. The full-bodied palate is laden with ripe, opulent black fruit and exotic spices layers, lifted by red berry accents and ferrous sparks, framed by velvety tannins and finishing with epic length." 96-98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023

The solid center-palate and sure nature says La Mission, as it should, being the second wine of the estate. Medium body with a creamy and refined tannin structure that is long and true. Oyster-shell... and blackcurrant character, as well as crushed stones. Direct. 48.3% merlot, 39.4% cabernet sauvignon and 12.3% cabernet franc. 95-96 James Suckling The 2023 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion showed beautifully, with a ripe, round, supple, sexy style. Black raspberries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and tobacco are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it has a classic La Mission supple, round, opulent style that has so much to love. 91-94 Jeb Dunnuck Deep ruby colour, makes an immediate impression with its elegant, uplifted tannic grip delivering careful construction of red roses, blueberry and black cherry fruit, grilled spices and understated energy. Will need a good few years in bottle before fully softening, but full of joy. 93 Points Jane Anson
