Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Chateau Berliquet 2003 has just been released to considerable and growing critical acclaim, Purchased by Chanel in 2017 it is part of their now legendary triumvirate along with Chateau Canon &... Rauzan Segla all under superstar winemaker and manager Nicholas Audebert. On the plateau of St Emilion with a blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the wine has fragrant flavours of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by a hint of lilac – it is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension in a word delicious. It will age well and is a shrewd investment grade wine (with a release price 21% down on last year) that is sure to follow the upward trajectory of Canon & Ruzan Segla. "A blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Berliquet has a pH of 3.53 and it is ageing in 10% amphorae and 90% oak barriques, of which 34% are new. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it hops from the glass with fragrant notes of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by hints of lilacs, fragrant soil, and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension." 94-96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "A plump and juicy wine with redcurrants and plums, as well as orange peel. Full and layered with round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Generous fruit in this vintage." 94-95 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Berliquet is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, equipped with double the number of vats, permitting proper separation of blocks. That's especially important, as Berliquet is a more diverse terroir than Canon, and it can now be interpreted with much more precision. Offering up aromas of cherries, black raspberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, refined, chalky tannins and lively acids." 93-95 points, William Kelley "The 2023 Berliquet was picked 23 September to October 5 at 45hL/ha, matured in 34% new oak plus 10 amphorae. Initially, the nose is quite backward and doesn't want to play. Give it a few swirls and it opens to reveal black cherries, blackcurrant and a distant tang of oyster shell emanating from limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry. Finely weighted, tensile and slightly savory in style, this is very elegant, finishing with citrus-like freshness. Berliquet has definitely been in the ascendant in recent vintages, and this is another to add." 93-95 points, Neal Martin

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2023

Chateau Coutet 2023. 1er Grand Cru Barsac comes from one of the finest Estates in Barsac/Sauternes and besides being modestly priced and delicious it also performs well as an investment grade wine... (see below) We tasted the 2023 at Mouton Rothschild last month – it was gorgeous with wonderful aromatics of summer fruits and a tough of spice. We all agreed that this will probably be the only Sauternes we will be offering – it was that good! "Beautiful aromatics, fresh acidity that picks things up from the first moment, crisp citrus, mango, pineapple, grated ginger, and a twist of bitter aniseed on the finish. Richly concentrated, reflecting small yields, but once again a wine that shows the huge potential of this style in the 2023 vintage. Harvest between September 20 and October 11." 96 points, Jane Anson "A Barsac with dried-apple, apricot and spice character. The botrytis comes through with a healthy and clean nature to it. Medium-bodied and medium-sweet with a spicy finish." 94-95 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Coutet is stellar. Soaring aromatics and bright acids drive through a core of lemon confit, apricot, mint, spice, passion fruit and pineapple. The interplay of deep, layered flavors and energy is so compelling. 2028-2048" 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau d’Armailhac 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

Château d’Armailhac is part of the Château Mouton Rothscild stable and is a wine we follow every year as it is always well priced and an excellent wine to invest in (see the table below), as well... as to add to your cellar. The 2023 vintage is no exception with price 15% down on the 2022 vintage and very favourable reviews from the critics. Ch. d'Armailhac blurs the lines between superb value for drinking and equally tremendous investment value: it would take pride of place in any cellar, whilst it should also quietly delivers returns to those who buy it. Please see Liv-ex graph below for the lower scored comparative 2015 vintage which is up 74% since it’s en primeur release price. Château d’Armailhac is not to be missed, everyone should add it to their holdings of fine wines. “There’s a powdery and open texture to this red. Full-bodied and layered with a pretty and weightless texture. Blackcurrants and blueberries and an orange-peel undertone. Velvety texture at the end. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.” 96-97 points, James Suckling “Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 d'Armailhac sings of black raspberries, wild strawberries, and tilled soil with hints of dried herbs and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is lively and elegantly styled, with plush tannins supporting delicate red and black fruit layers, culminating in a well-sustained finish. Very impressive! The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest ever percentage for d'Armailhac), 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.75. The alcohol is 13.5%.” 93-95 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown “High Cabernet, as is the story of the vintage on the Left Bank. A wine that also continues the new story of Armailhac following serious investment in vineyards and cellar, and technical director Lucie Lauilhé. Bright and vivid from the first moment, layered cassis, crushed mint, liqourice root, crushed rocks, an excellently precise, structured and textured Armailhac. Love it. Harvest September 7 to 30. 80ha in production, 50% new oak barrels for ageing.” 94 points, Jane Anson “The 2023 d'Armailhac is an attractive effort, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a pretty core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot—which is a rather high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this address.” 91-93 Points, Neal Martin

Chateau La Gaffeliere Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château La Gaffelière 2023 is another fabulous wine from this estate that has had the critics singing its praises, as we did when we tasted it earlier this year. The 40% of Cabernet Franc in the... blend adds to its richness and flavour. At £540 per case (12x75cl), a 21% drop in price from last year, it is both a blue-chip investment-grade wine and a wine that will be outstanding for drinking in a few years’ time. It is a wine we follow every year with good reason and comes highly recommended by us all. “The 2023 La Gaffeliere is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly emerges from the glass with fragrant scents of boysenberries, fresh juicy plums, and black raspberries opening out to hints of lilacs, Sichuan pepper, fragrant soil, and cardamom. The medium to full-bodied palate is exquisitely knit with filigree layers of black and red berries and floral accents, supported by plush tannins and wonderful tension, finishing long and perfumed. Wow! The blend is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.50.” 96-98 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, “The 2023 La Gaffelière is very pure and floral on the nose, with black cherries intermingling with violet and iris flower scents. The new oak is neatly integrated here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and layers of lightly spiced black fruit. Cedar and graphite furnish the poised but persistent finish. This is another in a succession of impressive wines from this estate that just oozes sensuality. Superb.” 94-96 Points Neal Martin “The center-palate reflects excellent terroir, with blackberry, black-olive and walnut aromas and flavors. Tight center-palate with firm but creamy tannins and a flavorful, classy finish.” 94-95 Points James Suckling “The 2023 La Gaffelière is a dense, powerful wine. As has been the case since 2018, La Gaffelière has a strong Franc component—40% in 2023. Usually, the aromatics are quite lifted, but this wine is rather dense. Nothing in particular stands out, as all the elements are impeccably balanced. This will need time to be at its best, but it shows promise. The introduction of 500-liter barrels and a reduction of new oak closes the wine a bit, but there's a ton of raw energy here and a good bit of tannin, too. 2030 – 2048” 93-96 Points Antonio Galloni “Love the depth and the vibrant fruit character here, and the vivid reflections to the colour. Chalky, fresh, extremely vibrant, real mineral pumice stone textire, and a clear reminder of its limestone soils. Aged in barrels and large oak casks. Tasted twice. Now withdrawn from the St Emilion classification. Alexandre de Malet-Roquefort owner.” 94 Points Jane Anson

Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2022

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa... Barton. “the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton... it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year. The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location - the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully. A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage - a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates... "The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage...There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss." “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2017

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince... notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. 2023 - 2057 97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026. 98 Points James Suckling Incredibly stylish, full-bodied and loaded with burnt orange notes, this is an amazingly detailed wine and one of the finest vintages of Rieussec in recent years. 19+ points Mathew Jukes

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2023

One of our most popular releases annually and a firm UK favourite from Saint-Julien, Château Talbot is in our opinion one of the best value left bank clarets. This 2023 has surpassed all... expectations and is offered on the UK market this morning 20.1% down on last year’s 2022. This is a classical style Claret which is absolutely gorgeous, it will last for many years to come and as Neal Martin says, may even be better than the 2022, we concur after tasting in Bordeaux. “A medium- to full-bodied red with very fine tannins. It’s firm and structured, showing a bright, dark-fruited character. Focused, with a good center-palate and a lingering finish. Really polished." 94-95 points, James Suckling "More proof that Talbot is on a roll, revved up and ready to take off. This is a brilliantly juicy but understated Talbot, lovely quality, classically-minded with cassis, blueberry, mint leaf, cocoa bean, espresso and powerful grilled fennel. Great stuff. 60% new oak for ageing, and a generous 54hl/ha yield." 94 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Talbot is another strong wine for this re-emerging estate. Powerful, deep and impressively resonant, the 2023 is striking. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, lavender and dried herbs build over time. There's terrific depth and intensity here, with fine balance to match. This is a superb showing from Talbot and the team led by Estate Director Jean-Michel Laporte. Drink 2030-2053." 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous "Offering up aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, plums, espresso roast and crushed mint, the 2023 Talbot is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a rich but lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Harvested over the course of fully four weeks, it's a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that attained 13% alcohol." 92-94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate "The 2023 Talbot contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to date, at 77%. It was picked from September 13 to October 6 at 54hL/ha according to winemaker Jean-Michel Laporte. Matured in 60% new oak, this has a fragrant bouquet that, like one or two fellow Saint-Julien wines, discretely unfolds in the glass. Quite precise with blackberry, cedar and light pencil box scents, there is a Pauillac-like tincture here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, grainy tannins. It’s overtly classic in style, albeit with more mid-weight depth compared to some vintages of Talbot. Displaying fine cohesion and sapidity, this fans out on the finish, with a deft touch of white pepper livening things up. This is a very promising Talbot, and I may actually prefer it to the previous vintage." 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2019

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com (June 2020) A juicy, fruity wine with lots of blue fruit, blackberries and dark chocolate. Pretty depth and structure to this. Polished and structured at the same... time Neal Martin, vinous.com The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. (June 2020)

Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2020

Château Talbot just released is one of St Juliens outstanding 2022’s. Jean-Michel Laporte (former La Conseillante Director) has made his best Château Talbot yet, reminiscent of the legendary 1982... and 1986, made during the glory days of the Cordier family. Big, juicy, velvety textured, with a ripe framework of tannins and bright acidity – gorgeous, classic St Julien with” lovely sense of place.” "one of the finest vintages from this château that I can recall... utterly classic, pure, lengthy Saint-Julien" 93-95+ points, Jeb Dunnuck “The texture is so beautiful and refined.” 94-95 points James Suckling "The 2022 Talbot is especially impressive, and if it fulfills all its promise, it is likely to emerge as this large Saint-Julien property's most exciting wine since the 1980s." 93-95 points, William Kelley “A great effort in 2022 with such excellent precision... and a lovely sense of place.” 95 points Decanter Since he arrived in 2018, Jean-Michel Laporte has been tightening up the screws. Domaine de Chevalier Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan 2023

With a 19.2% price drop for this vintage which comes with very high praise indeed from critics unanimously, this Domaine de Chevalier is a glorious traditional style Claret from one of the greatest... Estates in the Graves. When tasting the wine, the ripeness of cabernet sauvignon was evident and the depth of flavour and structure fantastic in this 2023. Chevalier is as gorgeous as ever. "Plenty of blackberry, blackcurrant, chocolate and flint aromas that follow through to a full body, yet it’s in check and focused with a beautiful framing of fine tannins. The purity of ripe fruit is impressive with cabernet really showing through. 63% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc." 97-98 points, James Suckling “The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier was picked from September 7 to 30 and contains 13% alcohol. This is quintessential "DdC" on the nose: black fruit, sous-bois and hints of black olive at first, subtle marine notes emerging with time in the glass. There’s wonderful focus and delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pencil-shaving-tinged black fruit on the entry. Perhaps a bit grippier with more spine than one would expect (especially following the more sensual 2022), this is very traditional in style, with a tremendously long and satisfying saline finish. Superb." 94-96 points, Neal Martin "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier reveals a perfumed, incipiently complex bouquet of dark wild berries, cassis, rose petals, spices and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and rich, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins and bright acids, it concludes with a long, saline, gently oak-inflected finish. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc is maturing in 40% new barrels." 94-96 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier has a deep garnet-purple color. It is a little broody and oaky to start, needing coaxing to bring out a gorgeous core of black cherries, redcurrants, and cassis, with underlying hints of violets and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate has a solid frame of firm, grainy tannins and bright acidity supporting the muscular fruit, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc." 94-96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "The 2023 Domaine de Chevalier is beautifully resonant in the glass. Deep, layered and quite persistent, the 2023 has so much to offer. In many vintages, this red needs time to be at its best, but this edition has enough forward fruit to make me think it will drink well with minimal cellaring, even if the acids remain brisk. Graphite, dried herbs, menthol, licorice and rose petal build into the tense, saline-infused finish. The 2023 is all finesse. 2030-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni "Always one of the benchmark wines of a vintage, and here showcasing the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon in 2023 (as well as the potential for varying yields, as they are down at 30hl/h here). Well balanced, great depth of ink, cassis, bilberry and damson fruits, rises through the palate, with tannic grip and plenty of grilled but carefully judged oak. A great Chevalier, not perhaps at the very top of recent vintages here, but one that will give huge amounts of pleasure, and captures the great classicsm of the year. 35% new oak for ageing, Bernard family owners." 95 points, Jane Anson

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes 2020

" Crafted from select parcels within the Gevrey-Chambertin village, including 'Les Crais' and 'Creux Brouillard' in the east with gravel soils, 'Combe du Dessous' and 'Combe du Bas' on western slopes... with clay, and 'Jouise' and 'Cerceuils' to the south, where stone and clay intermingle. The vines, averaging 60 to 65 years of age, thrive across these diverse terroirs. Each plot is harvested and vinified individually before being expertly blended prior to malolactic fermentation. This wine unveils exquisite scents of black cherry, blackberry, and mulberry, complemented by a subtle savoury nuance. The palate is met with a remarkable structure and tension, featuring succulent, ripe tannins that meld seamlessly with a rich tapestry of dark black fruits and hints of black pepper spice. This Gevrey-Chambertin demonstrates exceptional drive and focus, standing out as an exemplary representation of its origin."

IDDA, Etna Rosso 2020

Since its first 2017 vintage, IDDA Etna Rosso has been causing huge excitement in both the Italian wine scene and lovers of (Italian) wine globally. The wonderful result of the teaming up of Etna... wine producer Alberto Graci and Barbaresco legend Angelo Gaja (Gaja's wines have been described as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made" Wine Spectator). The name IDDA comes from Sicilian dialect and means 'she'- a term of endearment that the locals use to refer to Mt Etna, the highest active volcano of Europe. Gaja had been intrigued with Etna since his friend, the oenologist Giacomo Tachis, first introduced him to the mountains' splendour in the late 90’, and it remained a rumbling vision forming in his mind. Remarkably Burgundian in both weight and style, IDDA Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes grown on the South West slopes of the volcano at an altitude of between 600m and 800m above sea level. Fermented in a combination of oak and concrete vats and then followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete. Rich, beautiful, opulent, charming, fresh, harmonious with a lovely long lingering finish - the superlatives flow... “A perfumed nose of red berries, spiced cherries, hazelnuts and smoke. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and bright acidity. Poised and round with a silky texture on the mid-palate and volume to the focused, long finish. It really grows on the palate. Better after 2024.” 96 points, James Suckling

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023

The solid center-palate and sure nature says La Mission, as it should, being the second wine of the estate. Medium body with a creamy and refined tannin structure that is long and true. Oyster-shell... and blackcurrant character, as well as crushed stones. Direct. 48.3% merlot, 39.4% cabernet sauvignon and 12.3% cabernet franc. 95-96 James Suckling The 2023 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion showed beautifully, with a ripe, round, supple, sexy style. Black raspberries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and tobacco are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it has a classic La Mission supple, round, opulent style that has so much to love. 91-94 Jeb Dunnuck Deep ruby colour, makes an immediate impression with its elegant, uplifted tannic grip delivering careful construction of red roses, blueberry and black cherry fruit, grilled spices and understated energy. Will need a good few years in bottle before fully softening, but full of joy. 93 Points Jane Anson

M. Chapoutier, Saint-Joseph, Granits Blanc 2022

"Very darkly coloured. Meaty, bloody charcoal notes, along with melted-down blackberries and a touch of damson. Full-bodied but not massive, this is a very grand, savoury style that is extremely... concentrated and promises great complexity. Structured with forthright acidity and bold, grippy tannins, just a bit too bold, perhaps. Not the most refined but this is still an excellent wine. 10% whole bunch." Decanter 95/100
