Chateau Beaumont, Haut-Medoc 2021

“The 2021 Beaumont is a beautiful, expressive Haut-Médoc to drink now and over the next decade or so. Crushed flowers,red-toned fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and cedar open first. Aromatic and... medium in body, with impeccable balance, Beaumont is very nicely done. Pretty floral overtones lift the finish.” Antonio Galloni December 2023 90 Points 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Drinking Window 2024 - 2033

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2019

Bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle, and orange pith. The palate is honeyed with underlying acidity, adding zestiness and a persistent finish of orange rind and marmalade with notes of... pear, ginger, and exotic fruit. It is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin of Vinous (June 2020) and is recommended to be enjoyed from 2024 to 2055. It also has scores of 93 from Vinous and 92 from Wine Spectator. About Chateau Coutet: The estate, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, is located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region. It was one of the first vineyards in Sauternes, beginning wine production in 1643. The property was acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac." Owned by the Baly family since 1977, Chateau Coutet is known for its luscious and elegant Sauternes. The vineyards, covering 35 hectares, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The unique terroir of the region, along with the influence of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), contributes to the distinctive sweet and concentrated flavor of the wine. 2019 Vintage in Sauternes: The 2019 vintage for Sauternes was characterized by ideal conditions for the development of botrytis, leading to richly concentrated sugar levels in the grapes. This resulted in naturally sweet wines with complex flavors. The vinification process involved multiple picking passes, with the first starting in early October, allowing for the selection of grapes with high potential alcohol content.

AG - It is worth noting that the four previously recognised Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) Châteaux of Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angelus and Pavie, released their 2022 vintages at £3,400, £2,880, £2,148 and £1,788 per six bottles respectively, while their scores from Neal Martin were 95-97+, 98-100, 95-97 and 93-95 against Figeac’s 97-99! “A blend of 35% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Figeac is a brilliant wine with which to celebrate this property's elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status...Serious yet civilized, it's the quintessential Figeac ... Such is the inherent complexity of Figeac's terroirs that harvest took place sub-block by sub-block between September 1st and 25th. Congratulations are in order for the Manoncourt family, director Frédéric Faye, consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos and all their team.” 98-100 points William Kelley Wine Advocate “...The wine is sensuous, sultry, and lively. The fruits are drenched in cashmere, and velvet that caresses your palate. The levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed. Drink from 2027-2065. 98-100 Points `Jeff Leve “The 2022 Figeac is a magnificent, super-classic Figeac,... A wine of sublime delicacy and nuance, the 2022 possesses tremendous aromatic presence, finely sculpted fruit and phenomenal persistence. I especially admire the wine's freshness, energy and clean, mineral finish. The 2022 is a towering Figeac, a wine that brilliantly showcases the unique qualities of this site. Figeac is a rare Right Bank estate with gravel and blue clay soils that are not often found here...”. Drink 2032-2052 96-99 points Antonio Galloni

Chateau Gazin, Pomerol 2017

Château Gazin, while not as robust or intricate as its predecessors, achieves a delightful equilibrium that blends roundness and freshness seamlessly. Its 15-month maturation in both new barrels and... single-use barrels imparts an appealing structure and refines the tannins. Displaying a deep red hue, the bouquet introduces aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry and blueberry, subtly interwoven with discreet hints of vanilla and spice, notably nutmeg. A faint touch of menthol, characteristic of Cabernet Franc, lingers in the background, contributing a refreshing nuance. On the palate, the wine unfolds with a smooth and silky onset, echoing the red and black fruit notes from the olfactory experience, accompanied by floral undertones. Exhibiting a pleasing sweetness and ample volume, it maintains a graceful profile without becoming overly weighty. This fine vintage prioritizes the elegance of the fruit and is poised for immediate enjoyment.

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2018

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96/100 The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile... laced with the essence of graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is ultimately a wine of tremendous class that remains restrained and aristocratic in breeding. Don't miss it. Drink 2028-2048

Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2022

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa... Barton. “the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton... it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year. The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location - the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully. A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage - a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates... "The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage...There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss." “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

One of the most anticipated Pauillacs, Château Lynch Bages 2022 has been released with loud praise across the board, including comparisons to Mouton Rothschild neighbour (Neal Martin) and the... legendary vintages of 1982 or 1961 (Matthew Jukes). Lynch Bages always deserves special attention, consistently punching well above its Fifth Growth status. Always a wine of great stature, with an impressively long-term future the 2022 is "One of the vintage's most powerful, muscular wines" William Kelley, while “it's a classic Lynch Bages powerhouse, it has beautiful balance and purity" (Jeb Dunnuck). Lynch’s naturally exuberant style was beautifully expressed in this vintage, thanks to water-retaining clay soils of its phenomenal terroir that aided the development of highly concentrated grapes: “they are particularly rich and have impressively mature tannins, which balance beautifully with the alcohol content. It is an extraordinary year, marked also by a remarkable acidity” Jean-Michel Cazes (wine maker). “ beautifully balanced, very harmonious... reminiscent of Mouton... it is going to be a Pauillac for the long haul” Neal Martin “an undoubtedly impressive wine... it reminds me of the 1982 and 1961 in terms of the fruit intensity and depth of flavour.... a genuinely mighty Lynch Bages, and it will amaze the disciples of this world-famous Château” 19+ points, Matthew Jukes “Intense, not just a reflection of the vintage….Hugely impressive and complex, will age for decades”, Jane Anson A definite yes from us! Chateau Pontet-Canet 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

Château Pontet Canet 2022, in our view and those of the critics, has made an outstanding Pauillac in this great vintage. Awarded a potential perfect 100 points from James Suckling "The 2022 Château... Pontet-Canet is brilliant " JD a "Pauillac in all its powerful, energetic glory" LPB "The 2022 Château Pontet-Canet is brilliant and should easily be up with the crème de la crème from the Médoc." 97-99+ points, Jeb Dunnuck "It is impossible not to love this wine" 19+ points, Matthew Jukes "I very much admire the precision and vibrancy here. Unforgettable, Antonio Galloni Pontet Canet has long been at the forefront of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux; practices (a Limoges clay-based sunscreen and a camomile spray to counter any hydric stress) which lent themselves to be in harmony with the warmer climatic conditions in 2022, resulting in vines that were in perfect health. Alfred Tesseron told us that 2022 is the best wine that Pontet Canet has made under his ownership. "It has everything" he said. Production is down 20% on last year and the harvest was the earliest ever, starting on September 8th. It was also the longest harvest, finishing on the 28th. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot with the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot A fifth growth, but with its vineyards next to those of Mouton Rothschild, Pontet Canet belongs to an elite club of over-achieving chateaux offering incredible value, at a mere fraction of its Medoc peers. No wonder Alfred Tesseron was smiling!

Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan 2022

JL98-199
Château Smith Haut Lafitte have released their superb organic 2022 vintage - perhaps the best ever produced by the Estate and one of the highest scoring wines of Pessac-Léognan. “Is this the best... vintage of Smith Haut Lafitte ever produced? “98-100 points Jeff Leve Daniel and Florence Cathiard along with Technical Director, Fabien Teitgen continue to raise the bar at this excellent Pessac estate producing a sublime Grand Vin in 2022 “regal, full-bodied ... a great, great finish “Jeb Dunnuck. “The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte is a regal, elegant wine. Succulent inky fruit, licorice, spice, lavender and mocha open in a gracious, sublime Grand Vin” Antonio Galloni, Vinous The weather conditions in 2022 were perfectly suited to the Estates organic and biodynamic farming practices - practices which are helped with a little technological assistance! The grapes are monitored by satellite image to tell the team precisely when they should be hand-harvested. They are then picked in batches according to each plot’s progress, rather than one set date being imposed to harvest all. While being transported to the winery, they are covered in ergonomic hoods – designed by Daniel and inspired by Himalayan Sherpas – for protection against the elements. We're huge fans of their sumptuous, sleek style. “...what stands out is the width in your mouth as the wine caresses every part of your palate with its silky textures, and richness.” With volumes down by 15% and the rave reviews,“ This is going to grow to be a wonderful, delicious Smith Haut Lafitte” Neal Martin, this is a wine to grab while you can! Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2019

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com (June 2020) A juicy, fruity wine with lots of blue fruit, blackberries and dark chocolate. Pretty depth and structure to this. Polished and structured at the same... time Neal Martin, vinous.com The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) The great aspect of this Talbot is that it doesn't take its foot off the pedal on the finish, exerting impressive grip with that pencil lead lingering in the mouth. Superb. Expect this to land at the top of my banded score. (June 2020)

Cheval des Andes, Mendoza 2017

James Suckling 100/100 This is the greatest Cheval des Andes ever. Discrete aromas of blackberries, flowers, stone and licorice. So perfumed. The integration of fruit, tannins and acidity is... fantastic. Full-bodied, tight and solid with beautiful depth and integrity. Extremely long and exciting. Complex and compelling with such refinement and length. A blend of 62% malbec and 38% cabernet sauvignon. Available in September 2020. Better after 2024. Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate 97+/100 In 2017 saw an early harvest, but they started picking on the 6th of March and continued until the 10th of April, more or less normal dates, early but not so much. The varietal break down this vintage comes to 62% Malbec and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the wine is slightly riper and higher in alcohol than 2016 (this 2017 is 14.2% alcohol). The different plots fermented separately with selected yeasts, and the élevage lasted for 15 months and was in 50/50 new and second use barrels, 90% of them French and the rest made with wood from Eastern Europe. They used 45% Bordeaux barrels, 45% 400-liter barrels and, for the first time, a 2,500-liter oak foudre. This is clearly the darkest of the trio of vintages I tasted together here—2015, 2016 and 2017—but all three have the elegant and powerful profile, the luxurious and creamy character found in the best Bordeaux wines in the last few years, wines of power with precision, concentration, energy and finesse. This seems to combine the clout of the 2015 and the freshness of the 2016 and feels something in between those two vintages. Their work in the vineyard toward the maturity of the tannins meant the challenge in 2017 was to not let the grapes ripen too fast and too early. The work is different for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, to get round tannins in Cabernet and get some tension in Malbec, the contrary of the normal tendency of the varieties. 2017 has less ripeness than the 2015 but more density than the 2016. The texture is velvety, precise and harmonious. This year, they introduced a larger foudre for 10% of the wine, with the aim to reach 20%, so that volume is increasing every year. I think this is showing more precision, and in a more challenging year, they managed to keep the quality on par with 2016. They have changed the label this year, to a cleaner and more elegant label that also reflects the direction the wine is going in. 81,500 bottles produced. Jane Anson 96/100 Savoury black fruits with scorched earth smoke, eucalyptus and cocoa bean, given focus and a sense of momentum by fresh acidities and a juicy finish. Malbec has the ability as does Pinot Noir to either drink early or to age for years, and you feel the elasticity and promise of the tannins in this wine. Blend at the end of ageing. Aged in 2500-litre oak casks, 70% new oak. Drink 2021 to 2040

CVNE, Gran Reserva Imperial, Rioja 2016

Polished and structured with firm, very fine tannins. Lots going on here, with layers of black fruit, dried spices, graphite, coconut and cracked pepper. Full-bodied and so intense. Keeps going.... Long. The tannins are so fine and so numerous. One of the greatest modern gran reservas. 85% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% mazuelo. Try in 2025. 98 Points James Suckling The classical 2016 Imperial Gran Reserva was produced with a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from grapes that were picked between October 10 and 25 with good ripeness, delivering a wine with 14.5% alcohol after fermenting in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and two years in barrel and three in bottle. I was quite surprised, because the wine was quite closed and needed energetic swirling and time in the glass to reveal its true colors. It has more stuffing and finesse than the reserva. 2016 was a very good vintage, with freshness and balance to develop nicely in bottle. The tannins are very fine, and the wine is tasty and long. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2019. 95 Points Luis Gutiérrez

Joseph Drouhin, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Epenots 2019

The Joseph Drouhin Pommard Premier Cru 'Les Grands Epenots' 2019 offers a captivating sensory experience characteristic of high-quality Burgundy wines. It presents a beautiful deep ruby color,... indicative of its richness and depth. The nose is complex, intense, and elegantly nuanced, showcasing the traditional expressions of Pinot Noir. You will find hints of red fruits such as blackcurrant, gooseberry, and wild cherry, harmoniously mingled with lighter notes of violet and liquorice. Upon tasting, this wine delivers a clear-cut and lively impression, quickly giving way to a pleasant acidulous roundness. Its amplitude and power are balanced by an elegant structure, with tannins that are very much alive yet maintain a silky quality. The finish is long and satisfying, leaving behind delightful spicy flavors. The ageing process of this wine is meticulous, contributing significantly to its character. It is aged in oak barrels, which include 20 to 25% new barrels, for a period of 14 to 16 months. The origin of the wood is carefully chosen, coming from oak grown in the high forests of France. This ageing in high-quality oak imparts additional complexity and texture to the wine, enhancing its overall profile.

M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, De l’Oree 2022

"This has the characteristic breadth and fat of De l'Orée, with a surprisingly bright and piercing acidic line. Rich, ripe mango, with a touch of pineapple, the alcohol and oak are both surprisingly... well balanced for a vintage like 2022. Not the most mineral or fine perhaps, but very good. M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, l’Ermite Blanc 2022

"Surprisingly full-bodied for L'Ermite, richer in body than a classic vintage. This is precise and fine, with notes of lemon verbena and struck flint. Reductive now, so give it time, but there's... great drive and focus. Unusually high acidity (3.2-3.3 pH) which is rare for Marsanne. M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Le Meal Blanc 2022

"Decidedly rich in style, the oak is quite marked, with roasted pineapple notes, lemon verbena and lemon thyme. Very full-bodied, this is massive, assertive and powerful, but with great freshness and... energy. Flinty, smoky elements and a long, salty, mineral finish. One for the ages. Pure Marsanne, vines are over 50 years old, planted on pebbles, clay and some loess, facing south. Whole-bunch pressed, half fermented in demi-muids, half in vats." Samuel Billaud, Chablis Premier Cru, Mont de Milieu 2022

The 2022 vintage of Samuel Billaud's 1er Cru Mont de Milieu Chablis is distinguished by its high quality and refinement. From Billaud's vinard this showcases a remarkable balance of crisp acidity and... a rich texture with flavors of apple and stone fruit. It also features pronounced salinity in the finish, which is a hallmark of Chablis. The wine was matured 80% in tank and 20% in barrels for a year, before being blended and aged for an additional year in the tank. This process contributed to the wine's complexity and elegance, with a denser hue and lovely texture.
