Gaja, Barbaresco 2018
From the hardcore oenophile to the casual wine buff, I can attest to the power and purity of Gaja's Barbaresco, with this vintage having the most sumptuous perfume of blood oranges, orange peel,... straweberries, redcurrants, violets, rose petal and a touch of cedar. On the palate it is supremely elegant, with finessed tannins, dark chocolate, some balasamic elements and red berries. The acidity is mouthwatering and the finsh lingers for many minutes, enticing you to take another sip. Gaja seem to have returned to a much more traditional style of nebbiolo and the wine is that more special because of it.

IDDA, Etna Rosso 2020
Since its first 2017 vintage, IDDA Etna Rosso has been causing huge excitement in both the Italian wine scene and lovers of (Italian) wine globally. The wonderful result of the teaming up of Etna... wine producer Alberto Graci and Barbaresco legend Angelo Gaja (Gaja's wines have been described as "perhaps the finest Italian wines ever made" Wine Spectator).
The name IDDA comes from Sicilian dialect and means 'she'- a term of endearment that the locals use to refer to Mt Etna, the highest active volcano of Europe. Gaja had been intrigued with Etna since his friend, the oenologist Giacomo Tachis, first introduced him to the mountains' splendour in the late 90’, and it remained a rumbling vision forming in his mind.
Remarkably Burgundian in both weight and style, IDDA Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes grown on the South West slopes of the volcano at an altitude of between 600m and 800m above sea level. Fermented in a combination of oak and concrete vats and then followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete. Rich, beautiful, opulent, charming, fresh, harmonious with a lovely long lingering finish - the superlatives flow...
“A perfumed nose of red berries, spiced cherries, hazelnuts and smoke. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins and bright acidity. Poised and round with a silky texture on the mid-palate and volume to the focused, long finish. It really grows on the palate. Better after 2024.” 96 points, James Suckling

Il Poggione, Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Typical Brunello nose with some dry roses, ripe and fresh strawberries and soft spices such as cinnamon and cloves. Full-bodied with concentrated ripe strawberries and a crisp red cherry-like acidity that lingers on the palate and leads to a pleasant refreshing finish. 91 points given by James Suckling

Masseria Li Veli Askos Verdeca 2020
From the Valle d’Itria, an island of white wine in the sea of red wine that we come to expect from Puglia, this unearthed gem of a wine is made with the Verdeca & Fiano grapes and is a must try.... The intense fruity bouquet has hints of tropical fruit, green citrus, Mediterranean scrub and spice. The palate has luxurious weight, zippy acidity and superb flavour and length for the price - a new Italian star!

Rosso Valdimonte 2017
This is a UK exclusive, Sangiovese blend with maturity at an unfathomable price which is utter perfection for drinking this summer. Wines like this are what working in the wine trade is all about - a... small volume of exceptional, mature red wine parcel from an artisanal producer at an incredible price tag.
La Palerna sits high at 550-600m right on the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Thankfully for all of us, they are on the Umbrian side of the border and the price reflects this. At this altitude, the wines have a wonderful freshness and elegance. Yields are low, grapes are hand harvested and sorted, and such care and precision are taken in the winemaking which is evident in the quality of the wine. We have visited Bordeaux classified growths and Grand Cru Burgundies who take the same level of care in production. The overriding reason for all of this is perhaps down to winemaker extraordinaire, Mauro Monicchi who has worked across Bordeaux and the South of France, he now oversees winemaking for first class estates across Tuscany, namely Montalcino and Montepulciano. The quality of wines can also be put down to owner Luigi Merendelli's philosophy to produce "only great wines". I can confirm they do just that across the board, but this red is a home run at this price. The wonderful thing about central Italian reds are they are incredibly versatile when pairing with food and can be drunk all year around, indeed these are the wines to open at dinner parties or have at weddings.
