Chateau Batailley 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

The first classified growth was released this morning at a price 13% below last year and is as good as... We visited the Château last week and were again deeply impressed with the... quality—fruit-forward with immense depth, fine tannins, elegant, and fresh with a lovely lasting Pauillac finish. Batailley is one of our most popular wines and the best value Pauillac classed growth, with many loyal followers. It is known for producing wines of consistently high quality and excellent value. Their 2023 vintage is a great example of the Château at its best. It is perfect for cellaring and is a sound investment-grade wine. The critics are as enthusiastic as we were—see below. “Beautiful fruit with currants and blackberries, as well as notes of walnuts and chocolate. So much blackberry fruit here. Aromatic. Medium to full-bodied with very fine tannins on the deep and structured palate. Racy and long finish. 79% cabernet Sauvignon, 19% merlot and 2% petit Verdot.” 95-96 Points, James Suckling “Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Very densely woven nose with aroma reminiscent of blackcurrants, blackcurrant spurs, ripe blackberries and elderberries, fine toasting, subtle oak. A wine with elegance, purity and great freshness, precision and purity. On the palate well balanced with ripe tannins, finely grained, complemented by juicy fruit quoting the nose, excellent structure and length. Another great Batailley.” 96 Points, Markus del Monego MW "You want to know what Pauillac tastes like, roll up and enjoy this vintage of Batailley. Squid ink, slate, cassis, bilberry, slate, crayon, black chocolate, plenty of tannic grip, a smudge of grilled cedar oak and a squeeze of mint, it's all here. 57% new oak for ageing. Harvest September 12 through to October 5, Axel Marchal consultant, Philippe and Frederic Castéja owners." 96 points Jane Anson

Chateau d’Armailhac 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

Château d’Armailhac is part of the Château Mouton Rothscild stable and is a wine we follow every year as it is always well priced and an excellent wine to invest in (see the table below), as well... as to add to your cellar. The 2023 vintage is no exception with price 15% down on the 2022 vintage and very favourable reviews from the critics. Ch. d'Armailhac blurs the lines between superb value for drinking and equally tremendous investment value: it would take pride of place in any cellar, whilst it should also quietly delivers returns to those who buy it. Please see Liv-ex graph below for the lower scored comparative 2015 vintage which is up 74% since it’s en primeur release price. Château d’Armailhac is not to be missed, everyone should add it to their holdings of fine wines. “There’s a powdery and open texture to this red. Full-bodied and layered with a pretty and weightless texture. Blackcurrants and blueberries and an orange-peel undertone. Velvety texture at the end. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.” 96-97 points, James Suckling “Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 d'Armailhac sings of black raspberries, wild strawberries, and tilled soil with hints of dried herbs and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is lively and elegantly styled, with plush tannins supporting delicate red and black fruit layers, culminating in a well-sustained finish. Very impressive! The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest ever percentage for d'Armailhac), 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.75. The alcohol is 13.5%.” 93-95 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown “High Cabernet, as is the story of the vintage on the Left Bank. A wine that also continues the new story of Armailhac following serious investment in vineyards and cellar, and technical director Lucie Lauilhé. Bright and vivid from the first moment, layered cassis, crushed mint, liqourice root, crushed rocks, an excellently precise, structured and textured Armailhac. Love it. Harvest September 7 to 30. 80ha in production, 50% new oak barrels for ageing.” 94 points, Jane Anson “The 2023 d'Armailhac is an attractive effort, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a pretty core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot—which is a rather high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this address.” 91-93 Points, Neal Martin

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

One of the UK’s best loved and quintessential Pauillacs has been released to considerable critical acclaim. Long recognised as a wine that consistently outperforms its classification, Neal Martin... (Vinous.com) has again confirmed this by awarding it the exact same 96-98 points as first growths Lafite and Mouton Rothschild! With high scores and accolades from critics across the board and released at a reasonable price of £60 per bottle, we all agree this offers really good value... “a Pauillac endowed with huge potential.” NM “2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a brilliant classic in the making... reminiscent of a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982.” WK “An excellent wine that really over delivers ...I love it” GH Owned by the Borie family (Château Ducru-Beaucaillou & Château Haut-Batailley) Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2022 is most definitely worth taking notice of - it is one of the most spectacular wines of the Medoc and one of the all-time great GPLs .

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2018

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96/100 The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile... laced with the essence of graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is ultimately a wine of tremendous class that remains restrained and aristocratic in breeding. Don't miss it. Drink 2028-2048

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

One of the most anticipated Pauillacs, Château Lynch Bages 2022 has been released with loud praise across the board, including comparisons to Mouton Rothschild neighbour (Neal Martin) and the... legendary vintages of 1982 or 1961 (Matthew Jukes). Lynch Bages always deserves special attention, consistently punching well above its Fifth Growth status. Always a wine of great stature, with an impressively long-term future the 2022 is "One of the vintage's most powerful, muscular wines" William Kelley, while “it's a classic Lynch Bages powerhouse, it has beautiful balance and purity" (Jeb Dunnuck). Lynch’s naturally exuberant style was beautifully expressed in this vintage, thanks to water-retaining clay soils of its phenomenal terroir that aided the development of highly concentrated grapes: “they are particularly rich and have impressively mature tannins, which balance beautifully with the alcohol content. It is an extraordinary year, marked also by a remarkable acidity” Jean-Michel Cazes (wine maker). “ beautifully balanced, very harmonious... reminiscent of Mouton... it is going to be a Pauillac for the long haul” Neal Martin “an undoubtedly impressive wine... it reminds me of the 1982 and 1961 in terms of the fruit intensity and depth of flavour.... a genuinely mighty Lynch Bages, and it will amaze the disciples of this world-famous Château” 19+ points, Matthew Jukes “Intense, not just a reflection of the vintage….Hugely impressive and complex, will age for decades”, Jane Anson A definite yes from us! This is a grand scale Pauillac, a magnificent wine with a long, long life ahead. It’s a Lynch that commands your attention and it comes with a strong recommendation.

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’… Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man. "Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. Hints of nutmeg and liquorice come through, but the purity of cassis here is very impressive. Broad-shouldered on the palate, this is a dense, chewy vin de garde that will need at least a decade in bottle before approaching. Powerful, ripe yet never overblown, this is the essence of Pauillac, vertical, spicy and impressive. A wine with a real sense of place, this is a brilliant example of this château's unique style. Superb." 96-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "Concentrated, intense and muscular, not a word that I have used very often in 2023 Bordeaux. You get a deeply-rooted tannic grip, with soot, squid ink, cassis, blackberry, bilberry, liqourice root, slate scrap, pummice stone and mint. Lynch Bages seems to be wrought from a different place than it was a decade ago, impressive, powerful Pauillac, with an eye on long ageing. 75% new oak, Jean-Charles Cazes owner, Nicolas Labenne technical director." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. 2033-2073" 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni "The 2023 Lynch-Bages takes some time to really settle, so I gave it 5-10 minutes in the glass. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 points, Neal Martin "As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot." 93-95 points, William Kelley

Chateau Pontet-Canet 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

Château Pontet Canet 2022, in our view and those of the critics, has made an outstanding Pauillac in this great vintage. Awarded a potential perfect 100 points from James Suckling "The 2022 Château... Pontet-Canet is brilliant " JD a "Pauillac in all its powerful, energetic glory" LPB "The 2022 Château Pontet-Canet is brilliant and should easily be up with the crème de la crème from the Médoc." 97-99+ points, Jeb Dunnuck "It is impossible not to love this wine" 19+ points, Matthew Jukes "I very much admire the precision and vibrancy here. Unforgettable, Antonio Galloni Pontet Canet has long been at the forefront of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux; practices (a Limoges clay-based sunscreen and a camomile spray to counter any hydric stress) which lent themselves to be in harmony with the warmer climatic conditions in 2022, resulting in vines that were in perfect health. Alfred Tesseron told us that 2022 is the best wine that Pontet Canet has made under his ownership. "It has everything" he said. Production is down 20% on last year and the harvest was the earliest ever, starting on September 8th. It was also the longest harvest, finishing on the 28th. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot with the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot A fifth growth, but with its vineyards next to those of Mouton Rothschild, Pontet Canet belongs to an elite club of over-achieving chateaux offering incredible value, at a mere fraction of its Medoc peers. No wonder Alfred Tesseron was smiling!
