Chateau Angludet, Margaux 2020

The blend is 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot Interestingly, as the wine continues its march to official biodynamic certification, the wine was matured in 70% oak barrels and,... excitingly, 30% new clay amphorae, which naturally create convection currents to delicately stir the wine, adding real texture and depth of flavour. James Suckling "Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors with licorice and tar. Medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a long, creamy finish. Best of the trilogy". 92-93 points Julia Harding "Deepest crimson with smudgy rim. Lively, fresh aroma with the fruit not the oak to the fore... definitely one of the more approachable and digestible Margaux 2020s I have tasted. Hint of chocolate on the finish". 16 (out of 20) points

Displaying a deep red hue, the bouquet introduces aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry and blueberry, subtly interwoven with discreet hints of vanilla and spice, notably nutmeg. On the palate, the wine unfolds with a smooth and silky onset, echoing the red and black fruit notes from the olfactory experience, accompanied by floral undertones. Exhibiting a pleasing sweetness and ample volume, it maintains a graceful profile without becoming overly weighty. Chateau Grissac, Cotes de Bourg 2016

It's no surprise this wine won a gold medal from Bordeaux, who are the harshest judges of their own. Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2016

The 2016 Rieussec is gorgeous. Despite the relatively low acidity of the vintage, it preserves a good deal of aromatic freshness, with plenty of lemon confit, passion fruit and coconut overtones. The... decision to lower the Sémillon a touch and increase the Sauvignon Blanc has paid handsome rewards. The 2016 is not a truly profound Sauternes - that would have been nearly impossible this vintage - but it comes close. Quite frankly, it is nearly impossible to spit. Rating: 93-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. 37.5cl bottles. Drinking range: 2019 - 2037 Rating: 97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019) The 2016 Rieussec is a blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle picked form 26 September until 4 November. It has a much more straightforward bouquet compared to the 2015 with light honeysuckle and white flower aromas. There is good acidity in the mouth thanks the passerillé berries, nicely balanced with a touch of orange zest towards the linear finish that will hopefully gain more weight during its élevage. It is likely to be an earlier-drinking Rieussec than the 2015. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) Lots of botrytis here in addition to dried mushrooms and dried fruit such as pineapple and peaches. Medium to full body. Medium sweet. Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot, showcasing a classic Bordeaux style. 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2023 This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026. 92 Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2023 The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran. 93 Jane Anson, Decanter.com, May 202 This is powerful and juicy with well balanced, opulent berry fruits - easy to fall in love with. This really is one of the few that has tannins that feel well caressed by the fruits, and the slightly higher than average alcohols gives a flattering feel through the mid palate. Nice job from winemaker Marjolaine Defrance and owner Edouard Miahle (who is now president of AOC Margaux, having succeeded Gonzague Lurton). Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2019

James Suckling, jamessuckling.com (June 2020) A juicy, fruity wine with lots of blue fruit, blackberries and dark chocolate. Pretty depth and structure to this. Polished and structured at the same... time Neal Martin, vinous.com The 2019 Talbot has a very cohesive bouquet, "streamlined" being the operative word, before opening gradually to reveal a Pauillac-inspired aromatics, pencil shaving scents permeating the black fruit. Yet it is still unmistakably Talbot. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, creamy in texture with more depth in the middle than previous vintages (a shortcoming that, estate director Jean-Michel Laporte told me in the past he wants to address.) Cheval des Andes, Mendoza 2017

James Suckling 100/100 This is the greatest Cheval des Andes ever. Discrete aromas of blackberries, flowers, stone and licorice. So perfumed. The integration of fruit, tannins and acidity is... fantastic. Full-bodied, tight and solid with beautiful depth and integrity. Extremely long and exciting. Complex and compelling with such refinement and length. A blend of 62% malbec and 38% cabernet sauvignon. Available in September 2020. Better after 2024. Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate 97+/100 In 2017 saw an early harvest, but they started picking on the 6th of March and continued until the 10th of April, more or less normal dates, early but not so much. The varietal break down this vintage comes to 62% Malbec and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the wine is slightly riper and higher in alcohol than 2016 (this 2017 is 14.2% alcohol). The different plots fermented separately with selected yeasts, and the élevage lasted for 15 months and was in 50/50 new and second use barrels, 90% of them French and the rest made with wood from Eastern Europe. They used 45% Bordeaux barrels, 45% 400-liter barrels and, for the first time, a 2,500-liter oak foudre. This is clearly the darkest of the trio of vintages I tasted together here—2015, 2016 and 2017—but all three have the elegant and powerful profile, the luxurious and creamy character found in the best Bordeaux wines in the last few years, wines of power with precision, concentration, energy and finesse. This seems to combine the clout of the 2015 and the freshness of the 2016 and feels something in between those two vintages. Their work in the vineyard toward the maturity of the tannins meant the challenge in 2017 was to not let the grapes ripen too fast and too early. The work is different for Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, to get round tannins in Cabernet and get some tension in Malbec, the contrary of the normal tendency of the varieties. 2017 has less ripeness than the 2015 but more density than the 2016. The texture is velvety, precise and harmonious. This year, they introduced a larger foudre for 10% of the wine, with the aim to reach 20%, so that volume is increasing every year. I think this is showing more precision, and in a more challenging year, they managed to keep the quality on par with 2016. They have changed the label this year, to a cleaner and more elegant label that also reflects the direction the wine is going in. 81,500 bottles produced. Jane Anson 96/100 Savoury black fruits with scorched earth smoke, eucalyptus and cocoa bean, given focus and a sense of momentum by fresh acidities and a juicy finish. Malbec has the ability as does Pinot Noir to either drink early or to age for years, and you feel the elasticity and promise of the tannins in this wine. Blend at the end of ageing. Aged in 2500-litre oak casks, 70% new oak. Drink 2021 to 2040

Gaja, Barbaresco 2018

From the hardcore oenophile to the casual wine buff, I can attest to the power and purity of Gaja's Barbaresco, with this vintage having the most sumptuous perfume of blood oranges, orange peel,... straweberries, redcurrants, violets, rose petal and a touch of cedar. On the palate it is supremely elegant, with finessed tannins, dark chocolate, some balasamic elements and red berries. The acidity is mouthwatering and the finsh lingers for many minutes, enticing you to take another sip. Gaja seem to have returned to a much more traditional style of nebbiolo and the wine is that more special because of it.
