Chateau de Ferrand Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château de Ferrand is a superb St Emilion Grand Cru who have made a wonderful, great value 2022 - "Silky, soft, lush, and polished on the palate. Superb " Jeff Leve. Located at the highest point of... Saint-Emilion the " 2022 offers an incredibly pure, balanced, and structured style...the quality is there."Jeb Dunnuck Owned by the Bich family (of Bic pens fame) since 1978, however it is only relatively recently that the estate began to ramp things up. Since 2010 Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and her husband Philippe have invested substantially to bring Château de Ferrand firmly into the 21st century, with important and design-led technical changes in the winery, environmental changes with organic practices being implemented in the vineyard (and also many architectural and artistic renovations). The 2022 vintage is the estate's second vintage in its three-year conversion to organic certification; they hope to be fully certified by 2024. In 2019 new cellars were opened along with renowned consultant Axel Marchal coming on board and following a study of the soils and subsoils, the entire vineyard has been restructured through a rigorous selection of grape varieties according to their ability to adapt to the terroir of each plot and this meticulous attention to detail shows! Château Ferrand 2022 ” has plenty of personality and balance, takes the imprint of the vintage but gives it a limestone twist, and will age extremely well”Jane Anson

"The... levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed" 98-100 Jeff. Leve. Such is the inherent complexity of Figeac's terroirs that harvest took place sub-block by sub-block between September 1st and 25th. Congratulations are in order for the Manoncourt family, director Frédéric Faye, consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos and all their team.” 98-100 points William Kelley Wine Advocate “...The wine is sensuous, sultry, and lively. The fruits are drenched in cashmere, and velvet that caresses your palate. The levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed. The finish, with its seemingly endless waves of black, blue, and red fruits, with their natural spiciness and purity is off the hook. The seamless finish looks at the 60 second mark, and keeps on going! This is the first vintage for Chateau Figeac as Premier Cru Classe A. With this wine, it is clear they deserve it...”. Drink from 2027-2065. 98-100 Points `Jeff Leve “The 2022 Figeac is a magnificent, super-classic Figeac,... A wine of sublime delicacy and nuance, the 2022 possesses tremendous aromatic presence, finely sculpted fruit and phenomenal persistence. I especially admire the wine's freshness, energy and clean, mineral finish. The 2022 is a towering Figeac, a wine that brilliantly showcases the unique qualities of this site. Figeac is a rare Right Bank estate with gravel and blue clay soils that are not often found here...”. Drink 2032-2052 96-99 points Antonio Galloni

Chateau Gazin, Pomerol 2017

Château Gazin, while not as robust or intricate as its predecessors, achieves a delightful equilibrium that blends roundness and freshness seamlessly. Its 15-month maturation in both new barrels and... single-use barrels imparts an appealing structure and refines the tannins. Displaying a deep red hue, the bouquet introduces aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry and blueberry, subtly interwoven with discreet hints of vanilla and spice, notably nutmeg. A faint touch of menthol, characteristic of Cabernet Franc, lingers in the background, contributing a refreshing nuance. On the palate, the wine unfolds with a smooth and silky onset, echoing the red and black fruit notes from the olfactory experience, accompanied by floral undertones. Exhibiting a pleasing sweetness and ample volume, it maintains a graceful profile without becoming overly weighty. This fine vintage prioritizes the elegance of the fruit and is poised for immediate enjoyment.

Chateau Grissac, Cotes de Bourg 2016

A remarkably good 2016 that we knew we had to buy the moment we first tasted it. The wine is a delicious blend of Merlot and Malbec, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, that gives it layers of rich,... lush red berry fruit flavours, soft tannins and a hint of exciting minerality, that totally dwarfs its relatively humble status. It's no surprise this wine won a gold medal from Bordeaux, who are the harshest judges of their own. Château de Grissac dates back to the 14th century and has had a rich history, particularly during the French revolution. It is now owned and run by wine maker Madame Cottavoz who has devoted her life to her vineyards and wine. Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2022

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa... Barton. “the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton... it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year. The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location - the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully. A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage - a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates... "The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage...There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss." “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

One of the most anticipated Pauillacs, Château Lynch Bages 2022 has been released with loud praise across the board, including comparisons to Mouton Rothschild neighbour (Neal Martin) and the... legendary vintages of 1982 or 1961 (Matthew Jukes). Lynch Bages always deserves special attention, consistently punching well above its Fifth Growth status. Always a wine of great stature, with an impressively long-term future the 2022 is "One of the vintage's most powerful, muscular wines" William Kelley, while “it's a classic Lynch Bages powerhouse, it has beautiful balance and purity" (Jeb Dunnuck). Lynch’s naturally exuberant style was beautifully expressed in this vintage, thanks to water-retaining clay soils of its phenomenal terroir that aided the development of highly concentrated grapes: “they are particularly rich and have impressively mature tannins, which balance beautifully with the alcohol content. It is an extraordinary year, marked also by a remarkable acidity” Jean-Michel Cazes (wine maker). “ beautifully balanced, very harmonious... reminiscent of Mouton... it is going to be a Pauillac for the long haul” Neal Martin “an undoubtedly impressive wine... it reminds me of the 1982 and 1961 in terms of the fruit intensity and depth of flavour.... a genuinely mighty Lynch Bages, and it will amaze the disciples of this world-famous Château” 19+ points, Matthew Jukes “Intense, not just a reflection of the vintage….Hugely impressive and complex, will age for decades”, Jane Anson A definite yes from us! Chateau Pontet-Canet 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

Château Pontet Canet 2022, in our view and those of the critics, has made an outstanding Pauillac in this great vintage. Awarded a potential perfect 100 points from James Suckling "The 2022 Château... Pontet-Canet is brilliant " JD a "Pauillac in all its powerful, energetic glory" LPB "The 2022 Château Pontet-Canet is brilliant and should easily be up with the crème de la crème from the Médoc." 97-99+ points, Jeb Dunnuck "It is impossible not to love this wine" 19+ points, Matthew Jukes "I very much admire the precision and vibrancy here. Unforgettable, Antonio Galloni Pontet Canet has long been at the forefront of biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux; practices (a Limoges clay-based sunscreen and a camomile spray to counter any hydric stress) which lent themselves to be in harmony with the warmer climatic conditions in 2022, resulting in vines that were in perfect health. Alfred Tesseron told us that 2022 is the best wine that Pontet Canet has made under his ownership. "It has everything" he said. Production is down 20% on last year and the harvest was the earliest ever, starting on September 8th. It was also the longest harvest, finishing on the 28th. The blend is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot with the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot A fifth growth, but with its vineyards next to those of Mouton Rothschild, Pontet Canet belongs to an elite club of over-achieving chateaux offering incredible value, at a mere fraction of its Medoc peers. Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis en Medoc 2016

From a brilliant claret vintage, Château Poujeaux 2016 unfolds a complex and expressive bouquet. Ripe black fruits such as cherries, blueberries, and blackcurrants take center stage, interwoven with... enticing hints of jamminess. As the wine breathes, a captivating floral dimension emerges, revealing delicate notes of lily and violet. The palate is greeted by a full-bodied and beautifully balanced expression. The initial burst of black fruit flavors intensifies, complemented by a touch of Morello cherry. Hints of earth and spice add further complexity, while the smooth, silky tannins provide a delightful textural element. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a lasting impression.

Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis en Medoc 2015

Lisa Perrotti-Brow, Wine Advocate 84 Points The 2015 Poujeax is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with some spices on the nose over a core of red cherries and black plums plus a hint of charcoal.... It's medium-bodied and uncomplicated in the mouth with a decent fruit core and chewy tannins. James Suckling 92-93 Points Shows excellent depth of fruit with chewy and polished tannins. Full and very long. Gorgeous length. Steven Spurrier Decanter 90 Points Big, plummy but lifted Cabernet-Merlot flavours. Shows the usual richness of Poujeaux with more finesse and grip this year. Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2017

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince... notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. 2023 - 2057 97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026. 98 Points James Suckling Incredibly stylish, full-bodied and loaded with burnt orange notes, this is an amazingly detailed wine and one of the finest vintages of Rieussec in recent years. 19+ points Mathew Jukes

Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2016

The 2016 Rieussec is gorgeous. Despite the relatively low acidity of the vintage, it preserves a good deal of aromatic freshness, with plenty of lemon confit, passion fruit and coconut overtones. The... decision to lower the Sémillon a touch and increase the Sauvignon Blanc has paid handsome rewards. The 2016 is not a truly profound Sauternes - that would have been nearly impossible this vintage - but it comes close. Quite frankly, it is nearly impossible to spit. Rating: 93-96 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) A step up over the Carmes de Rieussec, the beautiful 2016 Château Rieussec has remarkable purity and freshness while still packing beautiful depth of fruit. Honeyed peach, apricot, flower oil, and even a hint of wet stone all emerge from this full-bodied, thick, opulent effort. I love it. It has a rounded, sexy style ideal for drinking any time over the coming 15-20 years. The 2016 is a final blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle. 37.5cl bottles. Drinking range: 2019 - 2037 Rating: 97 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019) The 2016 Rieussec is a blend of 83% Sémillon, 12% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% Muscadelle picked form 26 September until 4 November. It has a much more straightforward bouquet compared to the 2015 with light honeysuckle and white flower aromas. There is good acidity in the mouth thanks the passerillé berries, nicely balanced with a touch of orange zest towards the linear finish that will hopefully gain more weight during its élevage. It is likely to be an earlier-drinking Rieussec than the 2015. Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017) Lots of botrytis here in addition to dried mushrooms and dried fruit such as pineapple and peaches. Medium to full body. Medium sweet. Very long and intense. A triumph. Rating: 98-99 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2017)

Chateau Siran, Margaux 2020

The Chateau Siran 2020 from the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France, is a commendable wine that has received notable acclaim. This vintage is primarily a blend of 47% Merlot, 43% Cabernet... Sauvignon, and 9% Petit Verdot, showcasing a classic Bordeaux style. 95 James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2023 This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026. 92 Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2023 The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran. 93 Jane Anson, Decanter.com, May 202 This is powerful and juicy with well balanced, opulent berry fruits - easy to fall in love with. This really is one of the few that has tannins that feel well caressed by the fruits, and the slightly higher than average alcohols gives a flattering feel through the mid palate. Nice job from winemaker Marjolaine Defrance and owner Edouard Miahle (who is now president of AOC Margaux, having succeeded Gonzague Lurton). Tasted twice. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 35% new oak. Hubert de Boüard consultant oenologist. Harvest September 11 to October 3

Cissac 1998

The 1998 Château Cissac is an excellent vintage claret, known for its ability to age well. This wine has a deep color and strong legs, indicating its quality. It has a rich and aromatic nose with... plenty of cherry fruit and a hint of maraschino cherry at the end. The tannins have softened over time, making the wine smooth and well-balanced. It is enjoyable now and will continue to improve with age.

Clos de Nouys, Vouvray, Sec 2022

Clos de Nouys is the essence of dry Vouvray and this 25 acre estate is found just outside the eponymous sleepy village, where they are the masters of Chenin Blanc. This is as good and affordable as... Chenin Blanc gets. On the palate this is dry, full bodied and with a hint of flinty minerality and fantastic acidity for a clean finish that suits seafood perfectly.

CVNE, Gran Reserva Imperial, Rioja 2016

Polished and structured with firm, very fine tannins. Lots going on here, with layers of black fruit, dried spices, graphite, coconut and cracked pepper. Full-bodied and so intense. Keeps going.... Long. The tannins are so fine and so numerous. One of the greatest modern gran reservas. 85% tempranillo, 10% graciano and 5% mazuelo. Try in 2025. 98 Points James Suckling The classical 2016 Imperial Gran Reserva was produced with a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from grapes that were picked between October 10 and 25 with good ripeness, delivering a wine with 14.5% alcohol after fermenting in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and two years in barrel and three in bottle. I was quite surprised, because the wine was quite closed and needed energetic swirling and time in the glass to reveal its true colors. It has more stuffing and finesse than the reserva. 2016 was a very good vintage, with freshness and balance to develop nicely in bottle.
