Chateau Angludet, Margaux 2023

Château Angludet 2023 has been released this morning with a yield of only 20hl/ha as winemaker Ben Sichel completes their transition to full biodynamic status - the Margaux appellation average is... double that. Even so, the Château have reduced their prices by 10% from last year. With a loyal following, Angludet’s wines enjoy a worldwide reputation (especially in Great Britain) for their elegance, aromatic finesse and their exceptional ageing potential. Over the past decade, Angludet has moved from a reliable claret to a Margaux which shows off the best of the region's terroirs. Owned by the Sichel family (also of Château Palmer), this Margaux gem invariably delights with its elegance, balance and with the price drop represents exceptional value. “A polished and in-check red with blackberry, dark-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It has a medium body, creamy and round tannins and a savory finish. Well done for this estate. Better than 2022” 93-94 points, James Suckling

Another great Batailley.” 96 Points, Markus del Monego MW "You want to know what Pauillac tastes like, roll up and enjoy this vintage of Batailley. Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2019

Bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle, and orange pith. The palate is honeyed with underlying acidity, adding zestiness and a persistent finish of orange rind and marmalade with notes of... pear, ginger, and exotic fruit. It is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin of Vinous (June 2020) and is recommended to be enjoyed from 2024 to 2055. It also has scores of 93 from Vinous and 92 from Wine Spectator. About Chateau Coutet: The estate, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, is located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region. It was one of the first vineyards in Sauternes, beginning wine production in 1643. The property was acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac." Owned by the Baly family since 1977, Chateau Coutet is known for its luscious and elegant Sauternes. The vineyards, covering 35 hectares, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The unique terroir of the region, along with the influence of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), contributes to the distinctive sweet and concentrated flavor of the wine. 2019 Vintage in Sauternes: The 2019 vintage for Sauternes was characterized by ideal conditions for the development of botrytis, leading to richly concentrated sugar levels in the grapes. This resulted in naturally sweet wines with complex flavors. The vinification process involved multiple picking passes, with the first starting in early October, allowing for the selection of grapes with high potential alcohol content.

Chateau d’Armailhac 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

Château d’Armailhac is part of the Château Mouton Rothscild stable and is a wine we follow every year as it is always well priced and an excellent wine to invest in (see the table below), as well... as to add to your cellar. The 2023 vintage is no exception with price 15% down on the 2022 vintage and very favourable reviews from the critics. Ch. d'Armailhac blurs the lines between superb value for drinking and equally tremendous investment value: it would take pride of place in any cellar, whilst it should also quietly delivers returns to those who buy it. Please see Liv-ex graph below for the lower scored comparative 2015 vintage which is up 74% since it’s en primeur release price. Château d’Armailhac is not to be missed, everyone should add it to their holdings of fine wines. “There’s a powdery and open texture to this red. Full-bodied and layered with a pretty and weightless texture. Blackcurrants and blueberries and an orange-peel undertone. Velvety texture at the end. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.” 96-97 points, James Suckling “Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 d'Armailhac sings of black raspberries, wild strawberries, and tilled soil with hints of dried herbs and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is lively and elegantly styled, with plush tannins supporting delicate red and black fruit layers, culminating in a well-sustained finish. Very impressive! The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest ever percentage for d'Armailhac), 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.75. The alcohol is 13.5%.” 93-95 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown “High Cabernet, as is the story of the vintage on the Left Bank. A wine that also continues the new story of Armailhac following serious investment in vineyards and cellar, and technical director Lucie Lauilhé. Bright and vivid from the first moment, layered cassis, crushed mint, liqourice root, crushed rocks, an excellently precise, structured and textured Armailhac. Love it. Harvest September 7 to 30. 80ha in production, 50% new oak barrels for ageing.” 94 points, Jane Anson “The 2023 d'Armailhac is an attractive effort, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a pretty core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot—which is a rather high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this address.” 91-93 Points, Neal Martin

Located at the highest point of... Saint-Emilion the " 2022 offers an incredibly pure, balanced, and structured style...the quality is there."Jeb Dunnuck Owned by the Bich family (of Bic pens fame) since 1978, however it is only relatively recently that the estate began to ramp things up. Since 2010 Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and her husband Philippe have invested substantially to bring Château de Ferrand firmly into the 21st century, with important and design-led technical changes in the winery, environmental changes with organic practices being implemented in the vineyard (and also many architectural and artistic renovations). The 2022 vintage is the estate's second vintage in its three-year conversion to organic certification; they hope to be fully certified by 2024. In 2019 new cellars were opened along with renowned consultant Axel Marchal coming on board and following a study of the soils and subsoils, the entire vineyard has been restructured through a rigorous selection of grape varieties according to their ability to adapt to the terroir of each plot and this meticulous attention to detail shows! Chateau Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

What a brilliant wine to mark Château Figeacs’s first year as Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” ! Truly stunning and one of our stars of the vintage, with two potential 100 point scores. "The... levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed" 98-100 Jeff. Leve. "... the 2022 Figeac is a brilliant wine with which to celebrate this property's elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status." 98-100 points William Kelley. “The 2022 Figeac is a magnificent, super-classic Figeac..." AG - It is worth noting that the four previously recognised Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) Châteaux of Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Angelus and Pavie, released their 2022 vintages at £3,400, £2,880, £2,148 and £1,788 per six bottles respectively, while their scores from Neal Martin were 95-97+, 98-100, 95-97 and 93-95 against Figeac’s 97-99! “A blend of 35% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Figeac is a brilliant wine with which to celebrate this property's elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classé "A" status...Serious yet civilized, it's the quintessential Figeac ... Such is the inherent complexity of Figeac's terroirs that harvest took place sub-block by sub-block between September 1st and 25th. Congratulations are in order for the Manoncourt family, director Frédéric Faye, consulting winemaker Thomas Duclos and all their team.” 98-100 points William Kelley Wine Advocate “...The wine is sensuous, sultry, and lively. The fruits are drenched in cashmere, and velvet that caresses your palate. The levels of depth, richness, opulence, and vibrancy must be felt to be believed. The finish, with its seemingly endless waves of black, blue, and red fruits, with their natural spiciness and purity is off the hook. The seamless finish looks at the 60 second mark, and keeps on going! This is the first vintage for Chateau Figeac as Premier Cru Classe A. With this wine, it is clear they deserve it...”. Drink from 2027-2065. 98-100 Points `Jeff Leve “The 2022 Figeac is a magnificent, super-classic Figeac,... A wine of sublime delicacy and nuance, the 2022 possesses tremendous aromatic presence, finely sculpted fruit and phenomenal persistence. I especially admire the wine's freshness, energy and clean, mineral finish. The 2022 is a towering Figeac, a wine that brilliantly showcases the unique qualities of this site. Figeac is a rare Right Bank estate with gravel and blue clay soils that are not often found here...”. Drink 2032-2052 96-99 points Antonio Galloni

Chateau Gazin, Pomerol 2017

Château Gazin, while not as robust or intricate as its predecessors, achieves a delightful equilibrium that blends roundness and freshness seamlessly. Its 15-month maturation in both new barrels and... single-use barrels imparts an appealing structure and refines the tannins. Displaying a deep red hue, the bouquet introduces aromas of red and black fruits such as cherry and blueberry, subtly interwoven with discreet hints of vanilla and spice, notably nutmeg. A faint touch of menthol, characteristic of Cabernet Franc, lingers in the background, contributing a refreshing nuance. On the palate, the wine unfolds with a smooth and silky onset, echoing the red and black fruit notes from the olfactory experience, accompanied by floral undertones. Exhibiting a pleasing sweetness and ample volume, it maintains a graceful profile without becoming overly weighty. This fine vintage prioritizes the elegance of the fruit and is poised for immediate enjoyment.

Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2018

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 96/100 The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile... laced with the essence of graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Chateau Grissac, Cotes de Bourg 2016

A remarkably good 2016 that we knew we had to buy the moment we first tasted it. The wine is a delicious blend of Merlot and Malbec, with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, that gives it layers of rich,... lush red berry fruit flavours, soft tannins and a hint of exciting minerality, that totally dwarfs its relatively humble status. It's no surprise this wine won a gold medal from Bordeaux, who are the harshest judges of their own. Château de Grissac dates back to the 14th century and has had a rich history, particularly during the French revolution. It is now owned and run by wine maker Madame Cottavoz who has devoted her life to her vineyards and wine. Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2022

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa... Barton. “the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton... it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year. The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location - the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully. A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage - a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates... "The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage...There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss." “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2022

One of the most anticipated Pauillacs, Château Lynch Bages 2022 has been released with loud praise across the board, including comparisons to Mouton Rothschild neighbour (Neal Martin) and the... legendary vintages of 1982 or 1961 (Matthew Jukes). Lynch Bages always deserves special attention, consistently punching well above its Fifth Growth status. Always a wine of great stature, with an impressively long-term future the 2022 is "One of the vintage's most powerful, muscular wines" William Kelley, while “it's a classic Lynch Bages powerhouse, it has beautiful balance and purity" (Jeb Dunnuck). Lynch’s naturally exuberant style was beautifully expressed in this vintage, thanks to water-retaining clay soils of its phenomenal terroir that aided the development of highly concentrated grapes: “they are particularly rich and have impressively mature tannins, which balance beautifully with the alcohol content. It is an extraordinary year, marked also by a remarkable acidity” Jean-Michel Cazes (wine maker). “ beautifully balanced, very harmonious... reminiscent of Mouton... it is going to be a Pauillac for the long haul” Neal Martin “an undoubtedly impressive wine... it reminds me of the 1982 and 1961 in terms of the fruit intensity and depth of flavour.... a genuinely mighty Lynch Bages, and it will amaze the disciples of this world-famous Château” 19+ points, Matthew Jukes “Intense, not just a reflection of the vintage….Hugely impressive and complex, will age for decades”, Jane Anson A definite yes from us! Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023

Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’… Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man. "Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. Hints of nutmeg and liquorice come through, but the purity of cassis here is very impressive. Broad-shouldered on the palate, this is a dense, chewy vin de garde that will need at least a decade in bottle before approaching. Powerful, ripe yet never overblown, this is the essence of Pauillac, vertical, spicy and impressive. A wine with a real sense of place, this is a brilliant example of this château's unique style. Superb." 96-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "Concentrated, intense and muscular, not a word that I have used very often in 2023 Bordeaux. You get a deeply-rooted tannic grip, with soot, squid ink, cassis, blackberry, bilberry, liqourice root, slate scrap, pummice stone and mint. Lynch Bages seems to be wrought from a different place than it was a decade ago, impressive, powerful Pauillac, with an eye on long ageing. 75% new oak, Jean-Charles Cazes owner, Nicolas Labenne technical director." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. 2033-2073" 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni "The 2023 Lynch-Bages takes some time to really settle, so I gave it 5-10 minutes in the glass. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 points, Neal Martin "As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot." 93-95 points, William Kelley

Chateau Meaume, Bordeaux Superieur 2011

This red wine, from the regional appellation of Bordeaux-Superieur, is a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Wild blueberries, baked cherries and garrigue scents with... suggestions of pencil lead, stewed tea and wild sage. Large-format bottles are great for extended ageing periods due to the wine's slower rate of maturation.
